Have you ever watched a movie and *wished* you could try the food? Same.
Welcome to **Movie Magic to Table** — my cozy series where I bring iconic dishes from childhood TV and movies to life, one recipe at a time. Today, we’re diving into the dreamy seaside world of *Luca* to make the famous **Trenette al Pesto** — complete with potatoes, green beans, and scratch-made pesto!
🧑🍳 This dish is inspired by one of my favorite scenes in the movie, where Luca, Alberto, and Giulia dig into a big bowl of pasta around the table. And yes, we’re recreating that same magic — but with a little homemade twist.

Welcome to our new series, Movie Magic to Table, presented by Scratch crafted Meals! In this episode, we’re making the famous pasta from Disney’s Luca — Trenette al Pesto.
I hope you enjoy this recipe as much as I enjoyed creating it!
First, I’m peeling a Yukon gold potato using my KitchenAid peeler, then cutting it into small pieces — just one potato since we’re keeping this simple.
Next, I’m peeling and chopping some garlic. Nothing fancy, just keeping it fresh.
We’re also using fresh green beans. Be sure to wash them and trim the ends. I cut mine into 1-inch pieces.
Now let’s make the pesto! I’m using a food processor and adding basil, garlic, and Parmesan cheese. Freshly shredded Parmesan gives better flavor, but I’m using pre-shredded here to save time — totally up to you.
Then I add about ¼ cup pine nuts. I’m loosely measuring, but don’t worry — the full recipe with exact amounts is on my blog!
You want to pulse everything until it’s finely chopped, like a thick paste. Then slowly add olive oil while blending until you get a smooth consistency.
I added a squeeze of lemon for brightness — that’s optional, but it brings everything to life. Finally, I added a bit of fine sea salt, but feel free to use any kind you have.
Here’s what my finished pesto looked like — smooth, green, and vibrant!
Now boil your water and salt it generously. I added the chopped potatoes first, then after about 5 minutes, I added the green beans.
I used my cast iron pot here — it’s super versatile.
Okay… if there are any Italians watching this, don’t yell at me — I did break the pasta. I know it’s not traditional! 😅
Cook everything until the vegetables are fork-tender and the pasta is done. Important: before draining, reserve ½ cup of the pasta water!
Then drain the rest using a strainer and return everything to the pot.
Now comes the fun part — add your homemade pesto to the cooked pasta, green beans, and potatoes. Gently stir to coat everything evenly.
This is where the reserved pasta water comes in. Add it a little at a time to help loosen the pesto and coat the pasta. It keeps the sauce from sticking and gives the perfect consistency.
For the side, I was gifted a gorgeous sourdough loaf at my last farmers market — shoutout to the sweet baker who gave it to me!
I sliced it, added garlic butter, toasted it in the oven, and it was perfect. We devoured it with this meal.
This dish is incredibly easy and nostalgic — and I hope you give it a try! Let me know what you think in the comments.
