Last night of our vacation so we decided to open some bangers with our steaks!
2022 Saxum Broken Stones: Aroma: raspberry, cherry, fresh flowers, subtle smokiness, spices that I'm not experienced enough to pinpoint. I noted this was hot before knowing it was 15.9% – This does show. Palate: silky yet unctuous, coating every taste bud; predominantly red fruits; medium acidity and medium tannin. Beautiful wine. Reminds me a little bit of the few SQNs I've had. This is my 2nd Saxum after the '22 Heart Stone a few months back. I prefer this one, which has twice as much syrah in it. Surprisingly ready now with a 1-2 hr. decant. I have 5 left, so I hope they have a long, bright future, and I think they will.
2019 Sleight of Hand Syrah Psychedelic Stoney Vine Vineyard: Blue and black fruits, hefty dose of smoke (which I like), and an earthiness. I'm a fan of this wine, especially for the price. For me, this is best with food, especially something like brisket or even a good burger.
1976 Friedrich-Wilhelm-Gymnasium Trittenheimer Apotheke Riesling Beerenauslese Gold Capsul: Purchased at auction from ostensibly stellar provenance. Cork almost completely saturated but amazingly came out in one piece. Beautiful amber color (as pictured). On night 1, this smelled fine but had an off-putting metallic, almost putrified taste. So I poured it back and, on night 2, that luckily blew off completely. No idea how to explain this, but glad I didn't pour it down the drain. On night 2, this has beautiful aromas of gardenia (I think?), peach, lemon, petrol. Palate for me was loaded with overripe McIntosh apple with hints of brown sugar, lemon zest, caramel. Finish was nice, though a bit short compared to other sticky rieslings in this class. Overall, this turned out to be a beautiful, mature Beerenauslese.
2002 Zilliken (Forstmeister Geltz) Saarburger Rausch Riesling Auslese Goldkapsel Auction #3: Notes are getting a little sloppy by this point. On the nose there are strong notes of lemon-lime citrus along with tropical fruits. The palate has some nice acidity, and there is a nice long acidic finish. The big takeaway we got from this wine is how fresh and citrussy it is. Quite refreshing!

This feels suuuuuuper early to open that saxum, no? I feel like 16s are still a 2-3 hour decant.
