A veteran pizza chef from Massachusetts has been named among one of the world’s best — showing that his pies can go “dough-to-dough” with those made by chefs from pizza meccas across the globe.

Juan Gabriel Pérez, executive chef at Posto in Somerville, was named the 54th best pizza chef in the world at this year’s Best Pizza Awards hosted in Milan, Italy.

With more than 15 years of experience in Neapolitan pizza, Pérez is “praised for his creative flair, seasonal ingredients, and dough innovation,” The Best Pizza Awards said of the chef.

“With over a million followers worldwide, Juan blends tradition and modernity, earning a global reputation for craftsmanship and passion that honours pizza’s authentic roots,” the organization said.

Pérez, who is affectionately known as “JuangPizza,” landed at No. 60 in The Best Pizza Awards’ 2024 selection and at No. 53 in the 2023 selection.

Pérez’s expertise is reflected in Posto’s menu, which features the restaurant’s signature Neapolitan-style pizza baked in a custom Italian oven.

“We import the finest “00” pizzeria flour and most flavorful San Marzano tomatoes from Italy and we use our own “Fiore di Latte” mozzarella cheese which is made fresh every day,” Posto’s website reads. “We use local farmers and artisans whenever possible to create Neapolitan classics as well as exciting new ones of our own!”

Pizza options range from classics such as Margherita, and pepperoni to more creative pies including a prosciutto pizza with marinara sauce, mozzarella, parmesan, post-oven prosciutto, arugula and lemon and anchovy vinaigrette. Posto also serves classic Italian pastas dishes, entrees and antipasti.

The restaurant, which recently relocated from Davis Square to Assembly Square, is also no stranger to “best of” lists. Posto made the 50 Top Pizza USA ranking in 2024.

Posto is located at 400 Assembly Row, Somerville. The restaurant is open 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 11:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
