Had a wave of inspiration today and was like “I’d love to get into decorating cakes!” And whipped up this chocolate cake. Shout out to this sub because I found this recipe in here somewhere :p Not what I had imagined but it does still taste incredible. Next time I will definitely use parchment paper on the bottoms of my round pans lol that’s where all 3 layers fell apart on me

Recipe
2 1/2 c flour
1 1/2 c cocoa powder
3 c sugar
1 1/2 tsp salt
3/4 tsp baking powder
2 tsp baking soda
3 oz chocolate chips
3/4 cups oil
1 c buttermilk
3 eggs
1 1/2 c hot coffee
1 tsp vanilla

Frosting I winged; it was a mixture of powdered sugar, cocoa powder, butter, buttermilk, and vanilla

If you put some gummy worms on top (or imagined them there because who has gummy worms lying around all the time) it makes a killer “mud pie” cake

It looks like max’s cake from max&ruby. I LOVE IT

  3. CookingNBooking

You said it tastes incredible and sometimes (most of the time tbh) that’s all that matters! I hope you enjoy every bite!

  5. Birdie121

That’s how my first cake looked and I have now made 3 (small) wedding cakes. Welcome to the struggle and joy of cakes!

  6. Congrats on your first cake! even if it’s not fancy

  7. Carbon-Base

Dirt cakes are a thing, and yours looks excellent if that’s what you were trying to decorate!

Regardless, I think it looks great for your first attempt!

Practice makes perfect. Every one from here will be better. I’d eat this!

You may have also missed the crumb coat

The best thing about baking as a hobby is you get to eat all your mistakes

It’s a fantastic first try, I’m looking forward to seeing your growth

  15. tinylittleelfgirl

  16. Mercury_descends

I’d like a big piece, please! Seriously!

  17. Lmao we’ve all been there!! I agree with the top comment..the gummy worms would complete it forsure.

  18. Cute_Bandicoot_8219

You did it! A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.

What really helped me improve as a cook was when I decided that every time I cooked, no matter how good — or bad — things turned out, I would find one thing I was proud of and should repeat in the future, and one thing I could improve on. Which you’ve already done! <3

I have totally been here. I just grab some whipping cream and a little pudding mix and turn it into a delicious trifle.

  20. truckellbb

Yum, looks moist and tasty! Throw some ice cream on top 🤤

  21. blessurweeb

Ok so ngl looks soooo yummy.

Make sure your cakes are good and cooled off and your house isn’t too warm.

  22. TheRealMemonty

Well done on your first cake. Serve it proudly. I bet it is DELICIOUS!

  23. Scary-Alternative-11

Shoot, I don’t even care, I would eat that any day of the week!!

  24. Being that I always love a dollop of ice cream on a warm brownie or piece of cake, I love how this cake has already taken half the work out for me

  25. Showed this to my roommate, and she said, lovingly, “looks like a literal pile of shit, but I’ll bet it tastes delicious!!”

And that makes me think that /r/shitfromabutt would love to see this.

  26. Moppy6686

Imma say it right now… that looks effing YUM. Chocolate, I could never hate you 😭

  27. Honestlynniverse

Honestly looks like a pretty decent mud pie, good effort 👍

  28. Noodle_Nostril

Spray some whipped cream over it and dive in! It looks delicious!

  29. curatedconjecture

Lmao dw. My first cake looked worse. But you will slowly get the hang of it

  30. Chocolate always tastes good no matter the appearance. It can look “ugly” but taste just as good.

  31. flowerleeX89

Judging by the looks, the sponge is definitely moist but fluffy, definitely would taste great. Like others mentioned, a crumb coat + chilling should do the trick for standard cake decor. And for naked cakes, this is fine as well.

Good job, we all have first times, not all can even produce a delicious looking cake like yours! 💪
