After watching hours of Chuds video on YT and missing my old pit I left in Texas, I decided to take the leap and build one from scratch. Found a 120 gallon compressor on Craigslist, watched some welding tutorials, and got to work. The fire box is insulated and overbuilt af, I had a shop cut me the pieces in 1/4” plate. But it’ll sip wood slowly, even in the cold. I’m seeing maybe a 20 F variance front to back when cooking. Great convection, no serious hot spots, holds heat for days and built like a brick shithouse. Would definitely recommend for the welding capable or welding-curious (did the whole thing on a 110v MIG welder). Ask me questions!

The welder in me is going no no no. The smoker in me is saying shut up welder, lol. All in all, that’s a beast of a pit and looks good

Ignorant question but don’t you need a door or some sort of damper on the fire box?

This makes me wish I knew even one single thing about welding.

My god, that’s beautiful. Only thing I would do is maybe add 6-8 inches to the stack to help even temps across the grate, but that would likely increase your wood consumption slightly. (the insulated firebox is mint…)

This is an inspiration. This might be my excuse to buy a welder and learn….
