French astronauts will be able to enjoy lobster and foie gras dishes made by Michelin-star chefs at the International Space Station (ISS).
According to the BBC on the 2nd (local time), the list of foods for French astronauts to eat next year’s ISS mission included “roasted brioche with foie gras cream” and “lobster bisque with crab and caraway.”
French chef Anne-Sophie Pick, which has the largest number of Michelin stars among the world’s female chefs, has teamed up with astronaut Sophie Adeno to develop a menu that can entertain space foodies.
The European Space Agency (ESA) said, “The menu, named ‘France Finch of Space’, includes four starters, two main courses, and two desserts.”
Astronauts usually eat canned food, vacuum-packed food and freeze-dried food due to ISS’ strict food regulations. This is because it can be stored for at least 24 months, and only light food is allowed without crumbs. Fresh fruits and vegetables can only be enjoyed when new supplies have just arrived on the ISS.
But to boost the morale of space ice events, 10 percent of all meals are prepared specifically for each astronaut, and these “bonus meals” are often made in collaboration with chefs.
“Cuisines with braised beef and chocolate cream will not only entertain our mouths, but also help us feel connected to the planet and to our home country of France,” Adeno said.
Chef Pick said, “Cooking for space is a really thrilling challenge.”
