I have been waiting for this day for years: The McDonald’s Snack Wrap is back!
I lived on McDonald’s Snack Wraps through my teenage and early adult years. After covering high school football Fridays while working my first journalism job out of college, I would drive to the local McDonald’s and eat a Snack Wrap while finishing my articles. It was more than just a food item to me. It was comfort and nostalgia stuffed into a tortilla.
I was furious when the national chain took them off all U.S. menus in 2020. Wasn’t that a hard enough time for us? How out of touch can you be with your customers?
Snack Wraps returned to McDonald’s on July 10.
So, naturally, I had to rush to a McDonald’s on July 10 when the wraps made their long-awaited return.
But … I am still angry. McDonald’s only partially brought them back.
These Snack Wraps feature one of McDonald’s McCrispy Strips, topped with shredded lettuce and shredded cheese and wrapped in a soft flour tortilla. There are also two options: a ranch wrap and a spicy wrap with a spicy pepper sauce.
My main question is: Where is the grilled chicken option?
I know McDonald’s isn’t a premier restaurant for health nuts, but the grilled Snack Wrap was my go-to when I had to go there but didn’t want to eat a million calories in one sitting. Now, it feels like all the semi-healthy options have disappeared from the menu.
Why bring back the Snack Wrap at all if you’re not bringing it back completely?
I digress.
So what were my thoughts on the new wraps? A few of my colleagues, Haadiza Ogwude, Grace Tucker and Kaycee Sloan, tried them with me, and they were just … OK.
How is the McDonald’s Ranch Snack Wrap?
McDonald’s has ranch and spicy Snack Wraps.
I will say the ranch version tasted very similar to the old Snack Wrap. It had all the flavors I remember. No grilled chicken, though, of course.
Still, I thought it was good enough to satisfy my craving. I gave it a 3.5/5. It could have also used more cheese, not just a few shredded slivers.
My colleagues, who were not as big of Snack Wrap connoisseurs as myself back in the day, enjoyed it, for the most part. Together, the four of us gave it a 3.625/5 average rating.
How is the McDonald’s Spicy Snack Wrap?
The Spicy Snack Wrap is new, and I was pretty excited for this. I love everything spicy, so adding some heat sounded like a match made in heaven.
However, I was not too high on the flavor of the spicy pepper sauce. Yeah, there was a bit of a kick, but it tasted like it had been sitting in a box since the last time McDonald’s served Snack Wraps. The flavor was kind of stale.
The ratings amongst my colleagues were all over the map. I gave it a 2.5/5. Grace rated it a 1/5. Haadiza and Kaycee, though, both said 4/5, and they even liked the flavor of the sauce. On average, the spicy wrap got a 2.875/5 from the four of us.
Overall takeaway from the return of the Snack Wrap
After trying both Snack Wraps, I have decided that these are fine. They are enough to calm the fans who were angry about losing them, but that’s all McDonald’s really did here.
The return of the Snack Wrap was just a ploy to get social media haters to shut up.
