Does sideways mean gas is off?

  1. With these types of switches you can just think of it as the flow- when it’s in line with the piping it’s going through streamlined, when it’s perpendicular at 90 degrees like this it’s close like a line blocking through

  2. HOT-SAUCE-JUNKIE

Think of it this way. Assuming everything was installed properly, the handle should be parallel to be open and perpendicular to be off.

  3. BrotherNatureNOLA

Your supervisor right there didn’t tell you that perpendicular is off?

  4. TangledWonder

Handle in line (parallel) with pipe = valve open (gas, water, etc. flowing)
Handle 90 degrees to pipe = valve closed

  5. clapbacker5000

Flow is directly proportional to the direction of the lever.

Show us pictures of your supervisor.

And in this picture the gas is off.

Always use a marker to show flow direction on the handle.

  8. that threw me off. i thought it was a water valve, but indeed it looks like steel. someone replaced that handle.

but yes, if the handle is perpendicular to the pipe, the valve is in the off position.

Ball valves should always be straighjt the flow path unless its a special valve. An example would be on a tote. You want opposite so you dont accidently open it while moving. Also there’s a chance it leaks by depending on how old it is or usage i guess.

This valve should be in the closed position.

It should be. Handle inline of the pipe would be on.

Think if the handle as an arrow. When up, this becomes the directional flow.

  12. LouderThenYoMom13

It does if the valve handle hasn’t been messed with.

  13. fat-happy

Looks like a water line, gas is usually metered and a beefier valve

  14. Aimee_Andhersin

Usually with a turn on and off like that congruent with the pipe is on. But before doing anything with that I would make sure that I find the first point of Disconnect and the on off to the house

  15. Shipsnipe1313

The handle is (usually) keyed and only allows installation in an orientation that results in parallel = open / perpendicular
    = shut.

Keep in mind that people sometimes do stupid shit.

Are we sure this is even gas? Green handle and no meter in sight…it could be underground houseline but that doesn’t scream “gas” to me…

Edit: It’s in the off position for whatever utility it’s for.

I’m sorry. But I really can’t believe this is a question on here.

If the key is in the same direction as the pipe, it will be open.
If the faucet is “cutting” the pipe will be closed.
