2021 Weingut Keller Sylvaner ‘vom Austernfels’
An absolute unicorn of a wine made from a tiny and incredibly special magic castle of a vineyard in Neu-Bamberg. One of the great moments of my wine journey and a truly special memory was going to visit this special vineyard with Klaus Peter Keller and Felix Keller on a frigid December day, 2.5 years ago. One of those rare places with genius loci and you can feel the history, feel the soul, and feel that magic that manifests into this special wine.
Shared as part of the RieslingKenner Rare Bottle night at 312 Sushi last month, this was deeply mineral and savory with notes of herbs on a core of crushed oyster shells. It had much more to say that what was experienced that night and I was lucky enough to take the remainder of the bottle home with me and enjoy over the next two nights.
An incredibly cerebral wine that leaves you searching, forcing you to turn inward and speaks to something deep within. This young wine showed astounding depth and density with notes smoked herbs, oceanic salty minerality, and a satisfying finish of phenolic grip. Beautifully soulful and so so good.
