Downtown Macon hosts the annual competition for the Super Spud Trophy and several restaurants are after the prize, including Biddy’s and Cashman’s Pub.
MACON, Ga. — Another food battle has returned to the streets of downtown Macon.
Downtown Macon’s fourth annual French Fry Fight returned to the city on Wednesday, putting 23 restaurants up against each other to compete for the Super Spud Trophy.
Each restaurant was tasked with putting their creativity to the test, putting together a fry-based appetizer or entrée that would attract guests and impress their palates.
Biddy’s, located at 946 1st Street, is one of the many restaurants putting the fries up to the test. They believe their Garlic Parm Fries, which are topped with their garlic parmesan chicken nuggets, marinara sauce and melted cheese, are a top candidate this year.
“You can’t go wrong with our hand-breaded chicken nuggets that are just amazing,” general manager Jesse Lowe said. “The simplicity of everything and the freshness of everything, that’s why I feel like everybody should come try us out and choose us.”
Cashman’s Pub, located at 370 Cherry St, is returning this year for the top prize. They’ve won two out of the three Fry Fights, including last year’s, and are looking to go back-to-back.
“We’ve taken two out of three so far, and I’m hoping they let us go back-to-back, because I put a pretty good dish out there, and I feel like people are gonna love it,” executive chef Reggie Perkins said.
Cashman’s, thanks to Perkins’ creations, has placed in the top towards many recent food competitions in Macon. The restaurant placed fourth in 2024’s burger week; they placed first in Macon’s Taco & Tequila Crawl and won the Super Spud Trophy for their “Asian Sesame Fries.”
Perkins has jumped at every opportunity to compete in the competitions, not just for the bragging rights, but how great the opportunity is.
“Its so fun, we enjoy it,” he said. “We always enter the competitions. It gives me a chance to be creative (and) show what I can do. All these other restaurants, who people may not know about, give them a chance to shine and show that they have good food as well. I feel like everybody in Macon enjoys these competitions.”
Lowe echoed Perkins’ thoughts, noting that she loves looking through the menu and has been proud to participate in the competition for the past few years.
“It’s really fun,” she said. “I don’t really talk to a lot of the other places. I do look at the other menus, (and) at all the different pictures they post on there. They all look really good. I love seeing the Macon community come in, and everybody excited about Fry Fight.”
When it came down to choosing what fries to place on the menu, restaurants took a few different approach. Some, like Biddy’s, brought back crowd favorite fried favorites.
“I decided this year that we were going to bring back the simplicity of it,” Lowe said. “It is very simple, and it’s really rich in flavor.”
Other restaurants, like Cashman’s, elected to create a brand-new item for the week. Their “Chicken Pot Fry” is a classic chicken pot pie, but with the potatoes replaced with Fr fries.
“I always felt like I did a really good pot pie, and it’s something we haven’t sold here, so I figured I’m gonna bring that taste and just add it with the fries. So far, everybody who’s tried it, they love it, and hopefully they like it enough we can add pot pies to the menu.”
Macon’s Fry Fight will last from Wednesday, July 9, through Friday, July 11. Each order of fries will cost between $10 and $20 dollars. For a full list of all fries available, check out the story below.
