NAIROBI, Kenya, July 12 – Wines of South Africa (WoSA) is strengthening its presence in Kenya with a renewed push to tap into the country’s growing demand for premium wines.
The organisation held a tasting showcase in Nairobi this week, highlighting the rising profile of South African varietals in the local retail and hospitality sectors.
“Kenya is not just part of our strategy—it is our strategic focus,” said Matome Mbatha, WoSA’s Africa Market Manager.
“We’ve been doing groundwork here for over 10 years.”
Kenya’s wine market is projected to grow from Sh123.5 billion (USD 950 million) in 2024 to over Sh195 billion (USD 1.5 billion) by 2030, according to data from StrategyHelix.
While consumption volumes have remained steady at around 8,000 metric tons annually since 2019, WoSA notes that demand is shifting toward higher-quality labels.
The Nairobi showcase marked the 100th anniversary of Pinotage, South Africa’s signature grape, and included curated tastings, educational forums, and engagement with industry professionals.
WoSA’s broader regional strategy includes certification programs, hospitality training, and alignment with trade initiatives under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
