The tomatoes I lovingly planted versus the random volunteer tomatoes I haphazardly transplanted.

Isn’t this always the way? It’s the damndest thing.

Tomatoes seem to thrive on neglect. Don’t look too closely at them or take too good of care of them or they throw a fit!

I feel like the volunteers are surviving for a reason! I agree with benevolent neglect when it comes to tomatoes

Ha! My volunteer is a monster! 🤣

Our volunteers have adjusted to our climate and conditions! This is why some people I know just let some stay at the end of the season and boooom back they come soon as it warms up again! I’m definitely going to do this once I find my four or forty 😂 favorite varieties of heirloom/OPollinated! Lazy gardening is the way!

Same! My volunteers popped up everywhere after a tomato-loving chipmunk scattered seeds for me last year. The volunteer plants are thriving while the fancy tomato plants I bought are just so sad!

I had a volunteer tomato pop up in a shallow terra cotta pot that is thriving. It’s funny because the pot is kind need of flaking off on the sides and my husband was trying to convince me to get rid of it, but for some reason no matter what I grow in it does better than almost any other plant. Not sure what it is about that particular pot, but I’m keeping it forever.

It is possible to kill plants with too much love. Some neglect is necessary for strong character development.
