Folks in Homewood who love authentic Italian cuisine or an old-fashioned Southern breakfast will have to look elsewhere.

Politicians and retirees who gather for lunch or breakfast will have to find alternative locations.

The place where you can do all those things is shutting down on August 10. After 64 years of service, DeVinci’s Italian Restaurant is closing its doors. Here is the statement posted Saturday on social media:

“It is with a heavy heart that our family announces the closing of DeVinci’s Restaurant on August 10th. After 64 amazing years in business, our journey comes to an end. We have had the privilege of serving generations of customers and have developed deep friendships over the years. Our landmark building is being turned over to a new owner that shares the same love for food and people that we have given to our patrons. We will miss you all. Thank you for the years of patronage and hope to see you again before we say goodbye.”

The restaurant is located at 2707 18th Street South in downtown Homewood.

Last time I was in DeVinci’s, I looked around and saw:

Former State Senator Steve French

Political consultant Paul Shashy and his Pastor

Young Republican activist, attorney Derek Chen

On any given day, you can spot the political movers and shakers in DeVinci’s for coffee, breakfast or lunch.

DeVinci’s added the morning breakfast line in 2010 after Courtney’s on Birmingham’s Southside closed. DeVinci saw an opportunity and grabbed up their manager and breakfast cook. It worked.

Wonder if any local restaurants will spot an opportunity as DeVinci’s closes and grab up their best people? Will anyone add a Southern breakfast, authentic Italian, and pizza? They have until August 10 to take advantage.
