CLEVELAND, Ohio – What do Ohioans like to put on hot dogs?

Our favorite topping is ketchup.

So say the folks at CanadaCasino, who surveyed 2,016 American adults about their hot-dog habits in time for National Hot Dog Day. It’s celebrated on the third Wednesday in July – this year, Wednesday, July 16.

Ohio’s 10 favorite hot-dog toppings

1. Ketchup, 53%

2. Yellow mustard, 48%

3. Onions, 45%

4. Cheese, 43%

5. Chili sauce, 27%

6. Chili beans, 26%

7. Cheese sauce, 23%

8. Pickles, 21%

9. Sauerkraut, 19%

10. Bacon, 19%

Key findings

• Ohioans average 6.4 hot dogs a month (about 77 a year). No. 1 on the list? Montana, at 16.7 – more than 200 a year.

• Nationwide, the average American eats nearly seven hot dogs per month.

• Ketchup was the favorite in 23 states.

• 4% of Americans prefer to keep hot dogs plain.

• Spicy toppings are not preferred by many hot-dog aficionados: Sriracha (5%), Tabasco (6%) and chili peppers (9%) landed in single-digits.

The hot dog is believed to be German in origin and, because of its shape, once was nicknamed “dachshund” – hence, hot dog. Allrecipes.com has a good overview of the origin of ’dogs.
