First time gardener. Planned to only do herbs and tomatoes, but added zucchini on a whim. It’s been storming everyday here for the last several days and I walked outside to find this monster. Is it safe to eat if I cut the end part off?

I’ve never seen anything like that! It doesn’t look rotten, more like some sort of mutation/deformation on the blossom end. Very interesting!

It reminds me of those little mutations you get inside peppers sometimes

It’s a hermaphrodite flower with both male and female flower components. Happens occasionally with cucurbits, but always a bit creepy when it does. 🙂 Cut off the gnarly bits, but otherwise it’s fine to eat.

  4. Looks like the flower was begining to grow out the end. Should be good to eat all of it including the growth.

This one of those freaky things that you don’t wanna see but can’t take your eyes off when you see it. It looks like the zucchini is reproducing. 😬 It *seems* okay to eat but it looks so freaky I’m not sure i would be able to bring myself to eat it 😂

You’re picking the courgettes too late, they shouldn’t be that size, they’ll be flavourless and have huge seeds

It looks a bit old for harvesting, as well as the water schedule being inconsistent. Zuchinni is a fantastic producer, but try to keep it on a picking and watering schedule

Did it suddenly get hot and humid where you are? This is a hermaphroditic flower, it’s fine to eat, I swear curcubits put off more weird flowers in the hottest parts of summer

    i mean, there’s nothing that looks nasty🤷‍♂️

You can eat it. Like, it won’t make you sick, but they usually taste like crap when they get that big imo.

I’m afraid you’ve got a *Dr. Hannibal Lecter* cucumber there, OP!

We’ve been after this guy for a while, he’s going to be locked away for a long, long time….

Ah, vegetable gardening can sometimes really throw you a curve ball. It’s a rather confused courgette/zucchini but I suspect you can just lop off the bit that looks like it’s trying to give birth and eat the rest of it without a problem. It would be interesting to see a cross section though if you fancy cutting it lengthways.

It may be okay, but im not okay with how it makes me feel to look at it
