I brought this big green egg for $400. The homeowner thought it was a large since it came with the house but after research it seems like it’s an XL. After lurking on this subreddit I looked for certain things like cracks and didn’t find any. I’m going to replace the gasket and fire grate and purchased a modular table. The grill came with some items like a fire bowl/ring, heat deflector and a grate. What else should I purchase ?

  1. If there are no cracks this a good score. I’d get a kick ash basket and then add other things as I got used to the egg. Congrats.

Season the cast iron grate, and you’ll get great lines on your steak or flip it and use it as a black top for burgers.

The eggspander is great and useful when cooking for family or party. It’s a 3 tier system that allows you to cook multiple things at once so everything is done around the same time.

I place the half moon deflector on one side, and go baked potatoes, then on the direct heat side steak/veggies when the time is right. Eggspander is a must.

The heat deflector, half moon, and eggspander is all you need. The eggspander even has a slot for a wok if you do stir fry

I suggest upgrading from the OEM gasket, and many of our fellow egghead redditors will suggest

He’s helped a bunch of people with their gaskets

I would also suggest some kind of multi level rig, a pizza stone, and heat-safe probe thermometer

That’s an xl and a smoking hot deal. I never buy used eggs because I want the warranty but I would have snapped that up in a second. Great score right there.

  5. man you got ripped off. but i feel bad for you so I’ll give you $500 to dig you out if the hole and take this junk off your hands.

  6. I’d be careful cooking with it that close to your house.

Yes that’s an XL, and a very good buy for the price! Give it a good high temperature clean burn, replace the gasket, and re-season the daisy wheel per the r/castiron faq.

Make sure you recalibrate the thermometer too, you can do this by turning the nut so that the needle is at 212 degrees f when the probe is in a pot of boiling water. If it’s been left outside a while, then the thermometer spring might be cactus, by replacements aren’t too expensive. The cast iron grate should come up ok, but that older style regular grate is probably unrecoverable. Give the handle a sand and oil. She’s going to give you many many good years of delicious service!

  8. Get some heat proof gloves to grab the placesetter when it’s hot to go from indirect to direct.

Amazon silicon heat proof or people use welding gloves

Cheers on the deal! I got my xl the same way, seller thought it was a large , and for the same price!

Buy 2 pork butts and get to smoking!
