Justifying this as an early bday present for myself. Please be honest and tell me if I did okay. From Backyard Butcher I got:

2 22oz t-bones
8 prime strip steaks
8 prime black pepper fillet steaks
10 ranch steaks
20 beef chopped steaks (1/4lb ground burger patties)
12 boneless beef ribeyes

I think that’s it but I blacked out. Paid $399. Did I get hosed?

Think we all make….or almost make that mistake once 🤷‍♀️

Learn from it & move on, all you can do.

For me, it seems concerning that most of the meat is not graded, tenderizing is a big no for me, & you paid a premium price for not premium product(in my opinion….but i buy halves, so im not used to even retail prices 🤷‍♀️)

24# – 3.5# (15% of the weight you paid for is saltwater injected “enhance” the meat) = ~$20 per pound for sub-standard quality.

They don’t sell these to lose money. They are probably making 80% profit.

I used to love when Schwan’s came by as a kid. Haven’t seen one of those trucks in probably 15 years.

  4. I just paid $250 for 11.5 lbs of the choice combo pack from Costco (through Kansas City Steak Co). Meat looks well-marbled. Basically $21/lb for 4 ribeyes, 4 filets, and 4 strips. Will be sampling this weekend.

Simple names of food is always better than the creative names, it’s a marketing tool to fool you into thinking that products is “ more” than others. Like fortified food, what is that? Ranch Steak?

Meat truck man? Thank god that’s not a thing in Canada

Sounds like 40 steaks and 20 burgers for $399?

I don’t see why everyone says it’s a bad deal. That’s like an average of $10 per steak, plus the 20 burgers for free.

Probably should have been a better deal for buying that much quantity, but it’s not a bad deal.

  9. Sadly no. You are better off going to a major grocery store and getting the meat when it is on sale. It will be way better quality.

Based on the weights presented on the boxes (I can’t really see the bottom package) it looks like you got 22.59b pounds of meat which averages out to be 17.66 per pound. Seeing as how 5 pounds of it is ground beef and the number of steaks means a lot of them are 4 oz steaks I would say that yes, you got hosed

I cut meat for awhile about 20 years ago and a few years ago I had to help chase some pushy guys out of my mom’s living room that talked their way in her door. I never bought them from a truck, but I have always read that they pump the baggy with water to give the a more plump and juicy look, and as soon as you cut them open to cook, you get this microscopically thin piece of meat.
Those meat trucks use to make sense because you could justify getting a bulk purchase brought to your door, but now with doordash and grocery stores delivering, you could’ve got quality meat for a 1/4 of the price.

“Prime”…. some of the worst meat I’ve ever eaten came from one of those “deals”

Yeah you got taken is this is Backyard Butchers. Yikes.

Not to mention they have this “Steer for a year program” where they charge you 450$ a month where you supposedly get a whole cow. I doubt that. And for 5400$ total they can fuck right off.

Check out the difference in what you get

This makes me so thankful for my local butcher. I get packages, wrapped and ready to freeze. Did the math and it’s about 10-20 percent cheaper than grocery store

  15. bemyantimatter

You better cook that mechanically tenderized meat all the way through.

  16. adventurethyme_

So take this as a lesson and don’t feel ashamed. But next time I would find a butcher even if you have to drive for it, and buy a cow or partial cow through them. Then you’re also supporting local businesses too. Just my two cents

These meat trucks are as bad as carnival workers. They talk fast and overcharge for low quality meat. I fell for this once. I caught the guy inputting a higher amount in his handheld than we agreed to.

  18. PipecleanerFanatic

Betcha the meat truck man gets around more than the milkman

  19. Royal_Annek

Who the fuck mechanically tenderizes Ribeyes?? Is that a thing?

  20. glenmalure

Cannot tell until you cook it & eat it Good Luck.

So you have a large freezer to store it? Or will we all enjoy it this weekend? What time are we supposed to join you tomorrow afternoon? 15 or 16 hrs?

  22. AllYouNeed_Is_Smiles

You got scammed. The 22 oz t bones are probably the only actually decent sized steak. The rest will likely be like 1/4 inch thick. You’re paying more per pound for shittier quality meat than you’d get at a Kroger. Why do people fall for these scams if it sounds too good to be true it probably is.

  23. Mechanically tenderized beef is risky to eat unless its fully cooked. Meaning, even a medium cooked steak can make you sick.

No, you got the meat truck guy an early birthday present..
