I’ve never thought I would be in Japan eating at Ichiran Ramen and here I am.
While it might be a little bit overrated it’s still a very good Tonkotsu Ramen. Ichiran is the standard for Tonkotsu Ramen in Japan, while it isn’t the best Ramen in Japan neither the best Tonkotsu in the shibuya-shinjuku-harajuku area (or it might be), Ichiran has consistent quality that satisfies locals and is a good first taste for tourists into the world of ramen in Japan.

Also it would have been even better with high dashi and richer broth and medium or high spice but it was late so I ordered it milder
Definitely not the best Tonkotsu in that area but if you are a nervous tourist, scared to try local spots it’s still better than Tonkotsu in most countries best restaurants and super approachable.
People will flame Ichiran but it is good ramen no question about it.
I wouldn’t say it’s the standard, just a ubiquitous, fairly high quality example as far as chain restaurants go. I’d put Ippudo into the same category, though there seem to be a few more Ichirans around. Great late at night when nothing else is open, also when the tourist hordes have dissipated. Think Five Guys versus Shake Shack or In n Out (if you’re from the west coast of the USA) but for ramen.
