Pichon Comtesse Lalande is a legendary second growth that doesn’t need much introductions what comes to their first wine.
Often the consensus seems to be that buy the grand vin of a lesser estate, rather than second wine of a premier estate. Sure, but in this case I have a counter argument in the name of Réserve.
Nose is ripe, fruit forward with lactic milky and chocolaty background. The merlot shines through. There is ripe cherry, bilberry, blackberry. There is well integrated oak and chocolate. All the notes can be found on medium+ bodied taste. Tannins are smooth and the mouthfeel is milky after decanting for 2 hours.
Sure, this drinks more like Napa and doesn’t have any roughness. Just simply beautifully elegant and happy drinking Bordeaux.
I think Mr. Konstantin Baum scored this just a tad low or maybe this wine hit a soft spot for me. Delicious.

Their second wine in 1996 was one of the very best second wines I’ve ever had. I went through a whole case in the first 10 years of its life with great delight

That wine always hits. So does pavilion rougue.

I agree that second wines are often great value. Sometimes not on the really top 1st growths. Other bonus of second wines is they are usually approaching their drinking window yrs before the first wines.
