Took a while for me to acquire the taste. Maybe after 7-8x trying it.
Hard to avoid in the winter in Japan at fine dining washoku (sushi, kaiseki, etc). restaurants.

Is there really a difference between eating fish eggs vs fish sperm?
KlutzyRequirement251
Is it creamy or grainy? What other food is the texture most like?

Hey, we eat female eggs all the time. Can’t be sexist now. 🤣

I appreciate your sense of adventure, and glad to hear you enjoyed it. But this is such a hard pass for me. I’ve found enough foods on earth to enjoy that I won’t be exploring reproductive structures for any future meals.

Have you tasted the difference?

Haven’t had this in a while but really enjoyed it the last time I had an omakase experience. Would eat again haha we eat ikura so tomato tomato.

Tried this in Japan. Honestly wasn’t a fan. When in Rome though (or in this case Japan) do as the Romans (Japanese) do.

Mmmmmm….nah, I’m good on this one! Way too afraid to try that, especially knowing what it is
Salt-Theme-699
Delicious. There are lots of preparation methods. Far from the weirdest food I’ve ever eaten.

What’s wrong, hun? You’ve barely touched your sperm.

If you go to Hokkaido in January or February, you can try it super fresh and raw! It’s a rare treat you can only get during that time.
Anouchavan
It’s fish jizz. Unironically delicious.
Stickgirl05
It’s good!

I hear it tastes better if you feed the fish pineapple for a while before harvesting.

Hehe I was in the Tsukiji fish market in Tokyo and asked the chef in my limited Japanese if it was roe. He said something I didn’t understand, so he replied it was something like that. I later discovered I had eaten fish jizz. It’s even white and creamy when you bite into it.

My old boss did that when I worked at a sushi place. He sat down me and a coworker and grilled up some meat, then gave it to us with rice and lemon. Told us to taste it and let him know what we think before he’d say what it was. Turns out it was cow tongue. It was delicious. Whenever he had some he would give us some and it became one of our favorite things about working there. Also he would make Japanese curry and I haven’t had anything close to it since and I miss it every winter. I can still taste it.

So what is it????
Did you enjoy it?
1st time I ate this it was deep fried.
Googles translation:
Shirako (白子) is a Japanese term that literally translates to “white children”.
Standard challenge for fresh-off-the-boat expat colleagues. No one would say what it is and just laughed after.
