I used to get bugged out by this a lot. One person at 4 top has a severe allergy to X. Nuts, or shellfish or whatever. Other 3 people order that allergy. The fuck right?? I too like to live dangerously. But!! A server once made it make sense. He said “it happens so often because their partner/kids/roommates can’t eat that stuff at home, or even have it in the house. So they order it when they go out”

Might just be friends and aren’t worried about a reaction because no kissing or other shenanigans are expected to occur after dinner.
Or could be a mild allergy. My mom reacts to shrimp but only gets a bright rash on her face, no swelling or breathing issues. She avoids it to keep it from possibly becoming a worse reaction (mild allergies can evolve into life threatening ones with repeated exposure) , but she also has zero issues eating dinner with someone who orders shrimp.

I read that as “potable shellfish” and I nearly gagged.

I used to feel this way until it occurred to me how much easier it actually is for a restaurant scale kitchen to avoid allergens than a home kitchen, especially with an untrained cook.

seen this before, a lady had a horrible shellfish allergy and her date ordered crabby eggrolls. apparently he has to seriously clean his mouth before they can even kiss. why would he do that.

As a diner it would never occur to me that I shouldn’t order something someone else at the table is allergic to?
I’m eating it, not them.
If they’ve explicitly asked me not to order something bc their allergy is super sensitive or severe then of course I would accommodate.

Had someone order a salad that contains candied walnut while the only person sitting across from them had a nut allergy.

Eh, I have a mild tuna allergy. If I eat tuna I start coughing, and my throat gets itchy. It’s disappointing because I actually love tuna, I used to just try to power through but I can’t do that anymore. Sometimes when we go out for sushi my husband will get himself a tuna roll or nigiri. My allergy is serious enough that I shouldn’t eat it myself, but not serious enough to deprive my husband of something he enjoys. Also when we go out it’s one of his few opportunities to have it since we don’t keep it in the house.

My BFF is allergic to shellfish but I often order it when we are out. Her allergy isn’t so bad that she’s going to die if it’s in her environment, she just can’t eat it. So she orders her thing and I order mine.

If their reaction were so severe they can’t even be around it, they probably wouldn’t even risk going to that restaurant.
My dad can’t eat anything with shellfish in it or he gets a really bad rash, but he can be around other people eating it with no problem. This is not that weird to me.

Just make the best and cleanest experience you can for them. They know it’s stupid and are counting on you being absolutely perfect. It’s a shitty situation all around

I have diagnosed food allergies that have never caused anaphylaxis. (Because they’re not life threatening it took ages to figure out my chronic digestive problems.) In small quantities the absolute worst that’s going to happen is a sleepless night of stomach pain. My girlfriend washes her mouth out after eating my allergens just in case, but the risk is not life or death. As for the psychological part- I want everyone to enjoy the things I can’t. You never know when it’s going to be taken away from you! I developed a beef allergy probably some time in my late teens and didn’t know about it until I was 25. Eat all the burgers you can!

I used to love shrimp before developing an allergy to shellfish. I would not be bothered by anyone in my party eating shrimp at the same table as me, so long as the cook uses different tools throughout it won’t be a problem for me. Hell even at hibachi I’m totally fine, I just say no to the shrimp toss

Because then they don’t have to share, they can’t have it when they’re at home, or cause the person with the allergy insisted the person theyre with get what they want and “it’s not a big deal”

Ok. Yes and this is one of those fucked situations where you cannot be held responsible if you properly prepare according to allergies.
That being said, we had a couple who came in, and the wife was severely allergic to shellfish. Duly noted. We had clean boards, and she just wanted grilled chicken tacos and fresh made chips (we kept a dedicated set of fryers for fries and chips only). We were always well prepared for seafood/shellfish allergies and had the SOP in place even on busy nights. A manager was always on Expo, and I was the guy that had been there all day. I made sure this lady didn’t get any cross-contamination because I have an awareness of these issues.
The husband ordered fried shrimp tacos. Guys….shrimp tacos.
He offered his wife a bite of his taco, and she took it!!!!
The server was standing there, and I had come out to make sure everything was good, so I actually saw this happen. She almost immediately went in to Anaphylaxis and had to take the Epi-shot. 911 and all that mess, all before dinner rush.
We had a team meeting after, and all agreed that either his wife was really dumb or he was trying to kill her, and she was dumb.
I got nothing, man.

as a kid whose mom had a shellfish allergy, eating out was the only way I got to experience fish as a kid. probably not the case here but a potential alternative explanation for a ticket like this😎

It’s 90% them knowing it’s fake allergies and for the 10% who know their friend/partner/kid has a real allergy it’s “fuck it, I don’t get to enjoy it at home so I will here”.
