So I replaced my OEM gasket with a Rutland and put it on the bottom of my XL. Try as much as I like, I can't get the gap to go away. I bought enough gasket to replace it again in a year or so.ive tried loosening the bands and really putting weight on the dome, but nothing is really working.

Should I just add another one to the dome side?

I put a lantern on the inside so you can see the gap.

Pic #4 shows a lack of gap on the left side when in the cooking position. The rest are right side and back (obviously).

  1. Please take this as possible advice, I don’t know what im doing. I thought you could loosen the lid while it’s down and tighten it back up to fix the gap?

  2. Your band isn’t evenly spaced around your dome. It looks way high is some spots and low in others. Your carriage bolts are also WAY too loose which could’ve contributed to your band being misaligned.

You need to disassemble your entire band system and start fresh. Take the hinges and springs off, get both the bottom and top bands spaced evenly, put on the hinges, tighten the carriage bolts, and then hook up the springs. When I say tighten your carriage bolts, I mean to tighten them until they’re significantly bent. Like you should be thinking, “am I going to break something because I’m over tightening these things”.

In the third picture it looks like there’s still some left over gasket on the dome side. Did you fully remove all of the old gasket from the dome?

If old gasket’s fully removed and both sides are in fact flat on their own, then it will come down to resetting the bands/hinges. When resetting the bands, don’t only loosen the bolts in the back, but all of them, then tighten the bolts in the back when both top and bottom bands are spaced correctly (if you still have the spacers from BGE this step is a lot easier) and then tighten the other bolts when dome’s sitting flush on the base.

Band issue. Also, your top band isn’t NEARLY tight enough based on that last picture. Loosen it, get things to sit (a flat head screwdriver works great for pushing the band up/down), tighten that band down

Loosen dome bands, set dome evenly on base, retighten dome bands.

Just did mine. Make sure the bands are even across the egg. What worked for me is the top and bottom bands were about 1/16 inch from the gasket. If you look at your pics the bands are super uneven.

Loosen the bands and let the lid sit on the base, adjust the bands and tighten👍🏽

The band isn’t on correctly and you need to line the inner rim with a felt gasket

You people and your Rutland gaskets… you pay over $1000 for a grill, and then look to save $20 every few years on a gasket. A non-food grade gasket at that too.
