CENTRAL WISCONSIN – Mid-State Technical College will host a free community event, “Fire Up Your Future: Fire Academy Experience Day,” on Tuesday, Aug. 12, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at its Wisconsin Rapids campus.

The family-friendly event is designed to showcase Mid-State’s Fire Service Training Academy and highlight tuition-supported career opportunities in fire protection. Attendees will have a chance to watch live fire demonstrations from local fire departments, enjoy free brats and hot dogs, and explore firefighting careers through hands-on activities.

“This event is more than just a look at our program—it’s about building the future of our community’s fire protection workforce,” said Rick Anderson, dean of protective services at Mid-State. “We’re working to fill the skilled worker pipeline while also giving high school students the opportunity to earn real, career-ready credentials before they even graduate. It’s a win for students, families and our communities.”

Free program applications will be available on-site, and qualifying high school students in South Wood County may be eligible for free tuition through a grant from the Legacy Foundation.

The event also offers a timely opportunity for community members to learn fire safety tips ahead of Labor Day weekend, when outdoor fires, cookouts and celebrations typically lead to increased fire-related incidents.

Those who register by Aug. 8 will receive a free event T-shirt at check-in.
