After having breakfast at Hisa Franko (and a bit hungover) we drove to Milka stopping at Lago di Fusine, a 15 min drive from Milka. The drive was lovely, the natural beauty of Slovenia is something to behold. Our experience at Milka began before dinner as we decided to stay at one of their lovely rooms, the Cone Luxury Double was my favorite room from our honeymoon, it offered stunning views. We relaxed a bit in the room before dinner and asked if our reservation could be moved an hour later, thankfully the restaurant said yes.

A few hours later we came down to the restaurant and were greeted by the hostess and Joe,l the sommelier, Joel is from Barcelona, he spoke spanish so he took over and accompanied us throughout the meal, we love being able to communicate in our native language. We can’t thank Joel enough, he was amazing. The meal started at the lounge, a cozy space that sits in front of the restaurant and offers the best views, a minute later Joel showed up with the “champagne cart” and offered some affordable glasses of Slovenian sparkling wine and champagne, we went with the local wines, they offered a great QPR, great start.

At first Joel misunderstood us and thought we had lunch at Hisa Franko a few hours ago, he was worried that it would be too much food for us and advised us to share 1 menu. A great gesture but told him we had dinner the night before and our appetite wasn’t hindered at all.

The first bites arrived, some fresh and balanced, others punchy and full of flavor, beautiful plating. For the last bite we were invited to the kitchen where we met David Žefran, the young chef and co-owner of Milka (restaurant and hotel), he’s extremely down to earth and the kitchen had a great vibe, rap playing on the background.

We got seated at our table, couldn’t get tired of the beautiful view. We ordered a bottle of champagne from Moussé, L’Orange which has a cool history, it was lovely and a great QPR but I liked Les Fortes Terres 2018 that we had the night before at Hisa Franko a bit better.

One can easily see the Nordic influence in David’s cuisine, but he also gave us some spicy and Latin American inspired bites, full of flavor. We ordered the extra course available for 40€, a beetroot with a type of crème fraiche sauce and caviar, the signature dish of the chef, it was good and included a glass of wine. Overall an amazing meal with no misses and some great courses (some are missing from the photos). Service was warm and attentive.

Near the end the pace slowed a bit but nothing crazy, the desserts were some of the best desserts from the whole trip. After finishing the desserts we were asked if we wanted to end our meal at their comfy lounge, we gladly accepted. The petite fours where interesting, accompanied by some complimentary liquors and an extra (paid) glass of Slovenian sparkling, to finish the meal they brought 6 small “donuts” fried in chicken (or pork) fat, they were decadent. To our surprise they brought a second plate “donuts” and threaten to bring a 3^(rd) one, we’re big eaters but by now we were absolutely defeated, glad we only had a few steps to climb to our room.

Now that I wrote my summary for Milka and relieved the experience, I realize I messed up by not putting them on my Top Meals from the Honeymoon (previous post), Milka easily deserves the spot. Judging food alone I might give our dinner at Hisa Franko a slight edge but considering the whole experience there’s no doubt that Milka wins, for my wife the decision is easier, she liked Milka better in every aspect, they punch above their weight and it’s the best 2 star we’ve ever been to. If they keep pushing, they should eventually receive their 3^(rd) star, in our opinion they deserve it already.

Menu was 520€ for two, with the extra courses, bottle of champagne and aperitifs the total was around 800€, the value here was the best out of all our higher end meals (**&***). Breakfast, included with our stay (465€) was lovely, some of the highlights were the trout sashimi and a local spread made from bear fat.

Lovely review, thanks. Have been to Hisa Franko (which I adore) but not to Milka, which is currently very high on my list (together with Hisa Denk and Grič). Time to go back to lovely Slovenia.

Stunning presentation and backdrop. I always prefer dining experiences that bring the outdoors into the experience and work with the natural landscape. It’s so grounding.
