Doesn’t look very wagyuish to me. Especially for $40/lbs. Thoughts?

BasedTaco_69
It’s probably a Wagyu/Angus crossbred cow. They can be choice or any grade like any cow.
Edit: should be labeled as such if that’s the case but they usually don’t.

Fresh Market is consistently a place where you can overpay as much as you would like for just about any cut of meat.
Thomas_peck
Veeeeery mediocre prime at best.
Seen shit days ahead of that from Costco TBH for half the price.
Pale_Section1182
it’s “american” wagyu. i did the whole ribeye special when it was $33 a pound… it’s good, not $40 a pound good.
Everyday_sisyphus
Just looks like a choice ribeye
Jplague25
Brother, wagyu is a breed of cattle…Not the quality of the cattle.
Diligent-Soup-2176
A wagyu cow once walked within 500ft of this cow so it is therefore now wagyu.
futureman07
No. This is crap lol
Kongzillaaaa
Do not focus on marbling too much, focus on age, color, and fiber structure. That steak looks great
TurkeyRunWoods
Looks terrible.
Marbling is not what you want to see even in prime.
TheLugh
Doesn’t look like wagyu to me either.
fishbulb83
I’ve seen prime ribeye that looked more wagyu than that.
MRLONGISLAND86
That’s crazy the NY strips looked way better than the Ribeyes
endthepainowplz
Looks almost exactly like a really good choice, bordering on prime.
v1nnyv3ga
I’ve seen USDA choice with more marbling
Bringbackbarn
Not worth $40/lb that’s for sure
yo_coiley
Waste of money even if that will be a good steak
dsariol
Lol. Id like to see what their ribeye looks like.

People always conflate “Wagyu” with A5 grade Wagyu, which are the intensely marbled cuts you see.
Wagyu is literally just Japanese cow. There are multiple different breeds of cattle that are all 100% authentic wagyu. And just like how Angus beef can be select/choice/prime grade, wagyu will be a range of grades as well.
Only a small percent of wagyu is A5, most wagyu is a lower grade. There are plenty of 100% genuine authentic wagyu steaks that look just like this steak. It’s just lower graded wagyu.
That being said, this is pretty clearly a cross-breed. Cross breeding wagyu is common, especially in America and Australia. Who knows how much % wagyu this cow was, but it likely has at least *some* dna from a Japanese breed.
dommimommyy
I hear wagyu in the us is bs…typically crossed.
Dairy_Heir
Wag who?
Chaotic424242
At that price, it needs to be high grade, certainly not A5 or even close, but better than it looks for sure.

That’s about as wagyu as i am Japanese

I agree those ribeyes are not Wagyu. This is real wagyu, wagyu sirloins from Japan and winner of the World Steak Challenge 2023.
While I personally doubt this is actually Wagyu, There are technically different grades of wagyu based on marbling. It’s possible this is just a low grade or hybrid.
Either way, not something I would buy.

Poor level of quality standards from whoever runs that case. Those b/i ribsteaks whould have me questioning making any purchases

Oh man I am so jealous. I live in Colorado where the meat is so tough I am certain the cows were force-marched from Texas. Looks yummy.
Csusko
My local TFM had these buy 2 get 1 free. None of them actually looked like Wagyu…I left with chicken for dinner instead.
AwkwardFactor84
It’s probably just got some wagyu genetics in it. I get some prime steaks at my meat market that have wagyu genetics, but the farmer won’t label it wagyu. He also sells wagyu that he raises in true wagyu fashion. This is one of the non wagyu steaks.
Must be the Olympic 15,000m run gold medalist Wagyu Cow as those look 👀
deathazn
That’s not wagyu. Not at all. My angus has way more marbling.
klatnyelox
that looks like good stuff, but low-end AAA quality, not exactly Wagyu.
But Wagyu doesn’t mean A5 Olive fed wagyu, you can get lowgrade wagyu too. If it doesn’t specify the wagyu grade it means very little.
sh1ft33
Looks exactly like the ones we have at the restaurant I work at, from U.S. foods. Same amount of marbling. I’ll get you a 16oz and two sides for $32.99.

Wow, can’t believe the lack of love for TFM meat. I prefer it too much more than Costco, and their specials are some of the best prices I can find on quality meat. Way better than Whole Foods or some of the premium markets. So far superior to my giant or Safeway.
I do make sure I buy the exact marbling I want, and I am never disappointed. These choice strips below were $14 / lb (weekend sale).
