I went out for dinner yesterday and was very disappointed with what I was given. It just tasted like rice with a crunch here and there from the jalapeño. I couldn't really taste the salmon, and did not taste any cilantro or ginger as advertised (last photo).
Is this normal for this type of sushi?
Restaurant is Earls in Manitoba.

No it isn’t.
Not at all. It’s likely supposed to be about 2/3 rice and 1/3 salmon, then add all the sauces.
The picture looks closer to 95% – 5%
Wow, that restaurant really cheaped out on ingredients (salmon). The presentation is okay.
I see some chicken nuggets and frozen fries (chips) in the background. I guess that is the caliber of the restaurant.
It looks like happy hour. But some restaurants do have decent happy hour offerings.
ETA: They should be embarrassed to serve something like that (the salmon sushi).
This style is called oshizushi, bad ones tend to look like this but the better ones are more like 75/25 rice to fish, sometimes the rice will have a filling in the middle as well
It’s what you expect from a dish created solely for high margins
I feel like it looks okay but if you don’t like the taste then that’s that. I do feel like I typically see it with mackerel as opposed to salmon.
Cilantro and Jalapeño are very western ingredients, for a more authentic experience they would’ve doused it in mayo or basil cheese or something lol
I thought the point of it was a torched top side and a raw under side to provide contrasting texture and flavor. It’s so thin that it’s just cooked fish only.
First of all, you’re at an Earl’s. As a fellow Canadian, please do not take anything Japanese from their menu as law. This isn’t a bad looking dish and I’m sure it’s tasty, but it’s overpriced for that fish to rice ratio for sure.
Super light on salmon. You aren’t getting any texture or flavor from the raw salmon, because none is left.
Never heard of this place. I checked out their menu and their Mexican food looks just as bad as their Japanese. Why would your eat here?
Aburi is really only a Canadian thing, this style of sushi is very popular in Vancouver especially
Yes its a lot of rice and the fish pieces are smaller. No, it’s not the same as regular nigiri. I personally like aburi but I view it as a different item completely from nigiri, it is a lot of rice though
This is aburi salmon oshizushi. Instead of being rolled, the rice is placed into a cypress wooden box, the fish layered on top, and then pressed down. Afterwards they add nikari and blast it with a butane torch. It has a bit more rice than maki sushi
Only place I’ve ever seen salmon that thin was on a salmon bagel. But at least the salmon bagel had lots of salmon layered on it.
That’s pressed aburi sushi
Seeing as you are at an Earl’s I’m guessing there’s a decent chance you’re in BC. If you can, do yourself a favour and go to Miku or Minami for much better oshizushi aburi. Earl’s is a decent place for a chain but they are definitely not the place I’d go for sushi unless you’re in a group that wants burgers or pasta and you feel like sushi. They fill a niche but they are not top quality sushi.
Dude you went to a bar and grill chain for sushi…
idk but this looks delicious
There’s someone asleep under the table in second picture but everyone in the comment section is fighting over the sushi, lol!
