Hi, I usually cook my Tomato sauce with tomato passata like this one (https://www.kroger.com/p/mutti-tomato-puree/0085469300001) but it is kind of pricey.

Is it possible to replace it with Tomato Puree? The consistency ain't the same. Thank you!

Puree and passata are almost exactly the same. I use them interchangeably.

It’s normal to use purée or crushed tomatoes for sauce.

    Aren’t they the same thing…?

I regularly substitute passata with plain tomato sauce. I’ve never noticed a meaningful difference.

Mutti is my favorite. But I also use cheap store brand canned no salt added crushed tomatoes. Honestly, it’s also really good. I still make sauce my own way and it still tastes virtually the same.

    Crushed, whole, diced, puree.

You can use any of these to make tomato sauce.

Tomato sauce has a different consistency/ flavor profile than purée. I’d only use it if I couldn’t find crushed tomatoes or purée.

  8. My Italian friend blends canned peeled tomatoes with a stick blender for recipes that need passata.

You should buy a can labeled tomato sauce to replace passata, it’s like smooth tomato puree, not the jars of flavored tomato sauces but the canned kind that is pure tomato. Mutti passata is my fave, but that should work as a substitute that is much more affordable.
