Just a hobby cookier here. I have been making cookies since December 2024 and bought a Smart Sketcher projector back in April, as to not spend too much to get a feel for the process, but just now getting around to trying it out.

My question is, am I good charging more for the orders that will require me to use the projector even at my current skill level or do I need some more practice? For context, I currently charge $25/dozen and only sell yo friends and family.

I also ran into an issue where I thought I had made enough of the navy and quickly realized I did not so I had to make another batch of icing and try to color match which was soooo hard. Tips on that process/ how to ensure I have enough icing? I find myself with too little or too much with basically every set.

If you made it this far, thanks for reading.

Any feedback is welcome/appreciated!

I don’t particularly charge different based on use of a projector, bc imo, I’m choosing to use the projector in order to be perfect. So I include it in my pricing that I’m selling quality cookies at x, that includes any design regardless if I use the projector. What I do is limit the designs per dozen. If I’m feeling extra nice and someone only orders a dozen, I’ll do up to 6 designs and 2 of each bc I’m spending less time overall, but when I get an 8 dozen order, you’re going to be limited to 1 design per dozen. In regard to making the right amount of icing, start with doing colors that can lead to other colors. So for the set above, I’d try to do all my white, then grey, then navy. Ofc you have details on top, so make like an extra bag of the color and set it aside. You can always freeze your icing for later use too! I personally love 16oz deli cups and they defrost easily. I get mine from Sam’s club, but they’re available online or wholesale stores

  2. No matter what, $25 is too little.
I use my projector for pretty much every order so it’s just part of the cost.
I always make a little extra than what I think and like someone else say, keep it in the freezer. I always have 2 gallon size freezer bags full of leftover icing bags (each with those little bag clips). That way I don’t waste any icing and when I’m doing deep/dark colors like navy, I never start from white.. bc if I did, I would’ve already needed an elbow replacement surgery lol. For navy I would grab any blues, maybe some black, purples, etc. mix that up, add a dollop of fresh white icing and see what it looks like … Then I start adding food coloring. You will save time, icing, food coloring and your hands.
