I'm in cooler climes, so I made a temperature controlled proofer for my bulk fermentation. Works a treat, although it's getting a bit worn out.

Has anyone else made one? I'd love to see what others came up with.

  2. You are right. That looks totally worn out. You can send it to me for recycling. Thanks in advance.

this is so cool but it DOES look like you should be on some type of list

Is there a DIY or parts list for this somewhere? Looks great

  5. I use an aquarium heater in an esky. All the temperature regulation is built in. So about 5-10cm of water in the bottom, then a rack that I put my stuff on. Works a treat, and no stress.

  6. I do a similar thing; but use an old cooler and a lightbulb attached to a temperature sensor. In the 4 or 5 years I’ve had it, I’ve never had to change the bulb. It works great in the cold dry winter and in the hot humid summers.

I use a spare insulated cooler with a seedling mat plugged into a temperature sensor. Works like a charm.

My coffee maker has a hot water heater in it that keeps the top of the machine about 75 -80 deg f. I just put my dough in a bowl on top of it. And it def speeds things up.

  9. Yep. All you need is a closed loop controller and a terrarium heat pad.

I bought a proofing mat a couple months back but beforehand I was using a heated blanket

Mine is lower budget than that. It’s a styrofoam cooler (thanks Omaha Steaks) with a Vivosun seed starter mat. The mat has a sensor with it so you can set it to a temperature and not worry about it getting too hot. The cooler is large enough to accommodate all sizes of my mixing bowls

Sterilite clothing storage box and a heating pad from Walgreens

I learned my elective oven has a proof setting the other day…

I looked into doing this but then found a cheap bag thing on ebay that worked out a lot cheaper, that getting the bits myself. I’ve since changed ovens and have one with a proofing setting but I do find these work quite well if you’re regularly moving the dough during the first couple of hours

  15. I have the opposite problem. My fridge is my proofing machine.

  16. Yeah, I used the bed from an old 3d printer as the heat source. Worked pretty good. I like the Styrofoam enclosure.
