This shrimp has been in my deep freezer since 2023. Try or pass? What says you?

i’m sure it is safe to eat provided it was stored at the correct temp. it may not be “as good” but you bought frozen walmart shrimp so i can’t imagine your expectations are incredibly high. if it were me, i would eat it.

If it has been in the freezer the whole time,  then it is a shame to throw away good food.

  3. According to health inspection codes as long as it was frozen properly and stayed in the safe zone for frozen food the whole time, it’s safe to eat. Taste is questionable

  4. cyclorphan

It’s safe but will probably taste rather underwhelming aftet all that time.

  5. The issue is not one of safety but of texture I would not be surprised if this is weirdly mealy and yucky to put in your mouth once thawed. You might be best trying something like a shrimp cake or ground shrimp spring rolls etc so you aren’t as concerned with pote tial freezer burned textures

Is your name Mickey? If not throw it away.

  7. StrikinglyOblivious

I don’t see a lot of frost bite. it might be fine in soup, gumbo.

  8. ButtFuckFingers

Any extended power outages the past couple of years that could have resulted in thawing?

  9. theoracleiam

No, freezer burned = extra chewy

Will it kill you, no. But it might kill your soul a little

  10. Schartiee

Id defrost some in salt water and try it before I vomit to a recipe. Honestly, I’ve eaten 5 year old chicken and it was fine.

  11. -GreyPaws

If it’s been frozen the entire time its fine to eat. Go heavy on spices, maybe do some blackened version, or as others have mentioned, gumbo/stew

  12. silentv0ices

I know it will make me ill but that’s because I am allergic.

  13. TalsarGeldon

See if it st least passes the smell test and do a little taste after cooked, but before adding it to your food.

Spend the 20$ for a new bag and not shit your pants for the next 25 hours

It’s great value so no I wouldn’t have wanted them when they were first bought so definitely not now

  16. Trraumatized

Will be save to consume, but freezer burn will give it a less than optimal quality.

  17. Mike-Ox-Really-Small

It probably won’t cause any health issues, no more than any other Walmart brand shrimp.

After that long in the freezer though, the texture of them will be shitty and freezer-burned.

  18. denvergardener

I’d boil it and feed it to my dogs.
I wouldn’t eat it. Not because it would make you sick. It won’t. But it won’t taste right.

  19. MasochistLust

As long as it stayed frozen, there shouldn’t be any health concerns. Might not taste the best, though.

Personally, I’d use them as an excuse to go fishing (not that I’d ever need one). Shrimp on a circle hook with a slip sinker rig for kitties, drum, bowfin, and turtles.

You can barbecue it, boil it, broil it, bake it, saute it. You got shrimp-kabobs, shrimp creole, shrimp gumbo. Pan fried, deep fried, stir-fried. There’s pineapple shrimp, lemon shrimp, coconut shrimp, pepper shrimp, shrimp soup, shrimp stew, shrimp salad, shrimp and potatoes, shrimp burger, shrimp sandwich. That’s about it.

    My #1 food safety rule after working in Restaurants and Commercial Kitchens;

**When in doubt, throw it out.**

  22. Southern-Psychology2

It’s fine dude. It’s frozen. You can eat frozen things that are years old but it’s not going to taste good. You probably gotta eat it in one or two shots. You don’t want to defrost and refreeze. You don’t remember how long you had it outside in the fridge or it went straight to the freezer when you bought it.

  23. Cutaway2AZ

I mean if you said 1993 i’d say cook it through. But 2023? Send it.

  24. SlideEquivalent1846

As a chef approaching 10 years of work, I can confidently say that I would in fact, not eat this shit at all lol no chance, fuck that noise. The biggest question here is why would you have to eat this? In the time it takes to make this post and read through comments, you could drive to the store and buy another fresh bag. What’s the test here? It’s not like you’ll get white spot or vibriosis probably, but just buy another damn bag tf 😂 these will taste like ass anyways and be freezer burned to hell in that bag with an at home freezer.

  25. 2nd_Last_Thylacine

Product of WHERE? Or do they not provide consumers with that information in the States??

  26. boozillion151

When did you buy it? The best if used by date is more than likely an after thaw date. Regardless, if it’s been in deep freeze bacteria and parasites won’t grow. Its still going to taste like shit though.

  27. this-is-me-reddit

If it smells ok and tastes ok, I would. If it is flash frozen with brine. Those shrimp should be fine. It may be freezer burned.

  28. Will it make you sick if properly cooked? Probably not.
Is the obvious freezer burn on there going to make it taste like rancid goat ass? Probably.
