That usually happens to me if I leave it standing versus drinking it right away. The bubbles pop and the crema breaks

Because it’s foam.
Only the OL line has legit crema

I want Nespresso without foam 😭
Academic-Village-758
Are you using any milk? (Frothing) Or is this strictly crema?

Nespresso pod coffee, due to the centrifugal forces spinning the coffee and the air introduced while brewing, forms a loose foam at the surface. This differs from crema because crema is denser foam and contains oils from the coffee that are extracted and sit on the surface of the coffee. Nespresso foam doesn’t have the oils which is why it can taste bitter. The foam is breaking near the surface of the side of the cup, where the surface energy is different. It stays more stable in the middle because the foam doesn’t have anything disrupting it. Eventually it will creep inwards and all the foam will dissipate.
Personally, I always stir the foam up quickly after brewing, which makes it taste less bitter, and also seems to stabilize it somewhat.

This is completely normal for all Vertuo machines. The machine spins the pod to make the “crema” which is airy and foamy. The Original Line machine’s crema more closely resembles crema from a real espresso since the machine uses pressure to extract coffee from the pod.

You’ve got your answer (it’s not crema; it’s foam), but adding: fold it in before you start drinking. It’ll taste better, and you won’t see it breaking like this.
The-Singing-Bluebird
Serious question: Do people call this crema because they really think it is, or do they call it that because it’s what Nespresso calls it?
CJspangler
Not crema it’s foam created by air, Take you’re espresso shot, throw it in a bender bottle – shake it as fast as you can and pour it out again some air will be mixed with the espresso and come to the top as foam, just to illustrate it – if you drink it fast or add milk etc it’s going to taste similar , the longer it sits the more the air will seperate out
The vertuo spins the ponds to create pressure in the water in the pods. The Original lines act line a traditional espresso machine and just simply sends water thru the pods into the machine without addition of high speed rotation
Brilliant_Macaroon83
I had that machine and sold it for a new one and it brews smoother
oat-beatle
I will say melozio does this more than any other pod tbh
Suziannie
How long between brewing it and taking that photo?
It only looks like that when it’s been standing for a while.

It’s because it’s not really crema, just foam. It will happen regardless of your vessel after a bit. If you want legit crema, you’ll need an OL machine or a proper espresso machine.
TheHypnoticPlatypus
I never get proper foam with Melozio. Some pods foam less than others.

Yuck. This is why the OL machines are supreme.

I had issues shere my milk was starting to go bad, and then the foam would break into chunks. Once I had fresher milk, it seemed to stop happening. I always put my milk in the bottom of my mug first, then put the pod in and let the coffee ‘mox’ things up. It usually works well for me.
