iDealwine’s auction subsidiary, International Wine Auction (IWA) last year saw €39.1 million worth of wine and spirits sold, helping it be named as France’s leading auction house for wine and spirits.
Last year the auction arm sold the equivalent of 261,465 bottles (when scaled to 750ml) and it has been announced by France’s auction governing body as the leading auction house dedicated to wine sales for 2024 for the eleventh year, according to iDealwine.
A report published by the governing body said IWA had generated €10 million more than Sotheby’s in 2024, and had “established itself as the leader for Wine & Spirit auctions”. €33 million [not including buyer’s fees] was auctioned in total, with €21 million of the sales made by those living outside of the EU.
Cyrille Jomand, the CEO of iDealwine said that the IWA-iDealwine model had remained resilient in 2024 and “continued to be so in 2025 against a geopolitical and economic backdrop that does not spare us.”
“We continue to make strides in all that we do,” he said.
In 2024, the auction arm presided over the Hospices de Nuits-Saint-Georges Auction for the first time, seeing the average price of a pièce soaring 41.5% to €22,422.50 on the back of the smallest harvest in over sixty years. The last year has also seen it open a new office in New York, recognising the potential in the US market despite the uncertainty around tariffs, and send its first orders to Canada. In March, it announced revenues of €53.2 million (excluding tax) – a rise in 6% on the previous year – despite a slump in the fine wine market
According to this year’s iDealwine Barometer, white wine has gained traction at auction over the last 12 months, having been underrepresented at auction for years, due to the consensus that white wines don’t age as well as reds. However this has gained ground, and dry, sweet and sparkling wines now make up 28.7% of all bottles sold in iDealwine auctions, up from 23.7% in 2019, led by white Burgundy, although wines from the Loire, the Rhône, Savoie and Jura also saw growth.
Another trends identified by iDealwine is the rise of Pinot Noir from “unlikely” regions across France, according to db’s interview with iDealwine co-founder Angélique de Lencquesaing, which you can listen to here.
