As much as I like my Weber, I don’t find these images intuitive at all.

I just look at the actual vents, didn’t even notice there are logos

Airflow Indicators

Not at all and very easy to understand. Especially if you take time to browse the manual.

Off, low and slow, full power.
Seasoned_By_Smoke
I believe one is supposed to be smoke for lower temps and the other is showing wide open for grilling temps. Pretty simple.

I had to mess with them while the grill was empty to see what they did. Up and down arrow is full airflow. Wavy lines are partial air flow. Oval is fully closed. But yeah, the symbols don’t help anyone know that, lol.

More air more heat. Less air less heat. I don’t follow indicators for anything in life
suckinbutt
off, smoking, max temp.

All the comments are totally missing your point. I agree the iconography is terrible and basically nonsense. It would be better to just have the dots without any icons at all.
emelem66
I never even look at them.
Orbital_IV
I agree they’re dumb images
Abrecocos
Top: position indicators, bottom from left to right: no air flow, some airflow, maximum air flow. Since the vents are not symmetrical it’s hard to find the middle position but I believe that it is actually a little bit to the left of the middle position indicator.

Close the vent entirely – use a Sharpie to mark where the handle is. Open it a quarter of the way; mark it. Halfway, fully open, mark them.
PingPongMasterpiece
I followed a YouTube video and made my own markings. I turned the Weber upside down, moved the lever to mark 1/4 open, 1/2 open, and 3/4 open. I then etched it in with a grinder. I use them to control temp for low and slow and then open up to sear.

Agree that it makes zero sense to me. SO counterintuitive

1- Closed 2- Smoking 3- Open
Arrows – Just for cleaning ashes, so dont leave the handle in random position over the arrows lines

Yeah I fucked up my first cook by having the vent closed. I admit that I was too stupid to read the instructions first, but those images are dumb af as well.
WestCoastGriller
Nope. Only because I was trained by them.
You have closed. Smoke. Sear. (0% open, 25% open & “100%” open…”
Open all the way (so you see the “P” exposed by the bottom dampers) for highest heat.
Sweep back and forth to clean the ashes….

I think this is my issue. I intuitively see a fully stamped out oval as being fully open. I see wavy lines as air, which also means open to me. Then I remind myself that these are closed and low. The third one looks like a combination of closed and slow, which means fully open for some reason.
I still really like my Weber kettle and WSM, this is just a small critique.
PsyKhiqZero
Yeah icons are stupid. There is no consistency with them. Should have been an oval, then a oval with 2 smoke lines and then a oval with 4 smoke lines.
zerocoldx911
They’re pretty much useless, I just look from the grill side
flowrider1969
My kettle is so old I have no choice other than to use sharpie
ChickenEastern1864
Just bought my first kettle this weekend. I think that someone who isn’t accustomed to working any type of bbq/grill vents, and doesn’t know where the vents are on the Weber Kettle might be confused. As someone who has been bbq’ing and grilling for a long time, I kinda got the gist of what they meant, though I was only like 95% sure, and that other 5% was bugging the hell out of me. So sure, maybe they could consider changing them.

This is too funny. I’ve had my Weber for 15+ years and this still makes no sense to me.

They paid a team of designers in a department to sweat out this confusion.

Well, I don’t like that ash catcher at all. It’s always been hard for me to squeeze and put back in position. So I took mine off and use an old fashioned pan to catch ashes. I think the Slow N Sear ash catcher design is much better.

You put the lime in the coconut, you shake em’ both up.

Yes. Always need to look down on grill to see what the hell I am doing.
