FOND DU LAC – Crispy fried potatoes could be in your future lunch or dinner plans.

Streetwise asked readers what their favorite fries were in Fond du Lac, and answers ranged from fast-food classics to seasoned side dishes.

Whether served with a sandwich, fish or off the appetizer menu, here’s where readers said to get the best fries in Fond du Lac restaurants and bars, plus the top four chain restaurants for fries.

Ala Roma Pizzeria & Pub

Ala Roma Pizzeria & Pub, 171 N. Pioneer Road, offers french fries or sweet potato waffle fries with the sandwiches on its menu.

However, readers turned up for the truffle fries appetizer, tossed in garlic and parmesan, topped with basil and served with garlic aoli.

Ala Roma is open 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sundays and Mondays and 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays.

11:11 Burgers & Beignets

Fries are served with the burgers, sandwiches and fish fry options at 11:11 Burgers & Beignets, 718 W. Johnson St., and according to readers, they don’t miss.

Entree options include classic burgers, the Baconeater burger, Wisconsin pub burger, Phondy Cheesesteak sandwich, BLT and more.

11:11 is open 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sundays through Thursdays, 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Fridays and 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturdays.

Gilles Frozen Custard

Gilles Frozen Custard, 819 S. Main St., garnered a lot of votes for its fresh and crispy fries, which can be ordered on their own, with cheese sauce or added alongside an order of Gillieburgers, Fish-wiches, a cheeseburger or anything else from the menu.

Gilles is open 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily until it closes for the season in November.

Tuckers

Tuckers, 927 S. Main St., is a local favorite for burgers, chili and its crinkle-cut french fries among its menu items. Fries come with the value meals — including the Homestyle Cheeseburger, Tucker’s Topper and beer batter cod sandwich — though a few readers like to dip their fries into the broccoli cheese soup.

Tuckers is open 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. every day except Sundays, and the drive through is open 10:30 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Schmitty’s Oar House Bar & Grill 

Schmitty’s Oar House Bar & Grill, N7044 Winnebago Drive, offers several potato-based side selections to add to a burger, sandwich and more: fries, seasoned waffle fries, sweet potato fries, homemade ranch seasoned chips and potato salad.

Poutine and Bacon Cheeseburger Totchos are among the large selection of appetizers, and occasionally, garlic parmesan fries make it onto the restaurant’s specials list.

Schmitty’s is open 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. Sundays through Thursdays, and until 2:30 a.m. Fridays and Saturdays.

Sully’s Irish Pub

Sully’s Irish Pub, 384 S. Main St., includes fries with its burgers, sandwiches and the Fish ‘n Chips. Diners also have an option to upgrade to waffle fries on the burgers and sandwiches, whether it’s the patty melt, Jameson burger, Sloppy Sully or another menu item.

The kitchen at Sully’s is open 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily.

Bob’s on the Avenue

Readers praise the seasoned fries on the sides menu at Bob’s on the Avenue, 689 Fond du Lac Ave., which also has crinkle cut fries and potato wedges. In addition to pizza, pasta, dinners and a Friday fish fry, Bob’s has a build-your-own burger, pizza burger, Bourbon Street Steak Sandwich and other sandwiches.

Bob’s on the Avenue is open 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sundays and Mondays, and 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays.

The Stretch

The New Stretch Family Restaurant, 565 N. Pioneer Road, offers a number of sandwiches to go along with its reader-celebrated fries, including burgers, wraps, sourdough melts, rye melts, gyros and more.

The restaurant is open 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays and 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sundays and Mondays.

Coliseum Sports Bar & Grill

The Coliseum Sports Bar & Grill, 91 S. Main St., serves thick-cut french fries or Coliseum chips with its sandwiches, including its cheeseburger, gyro, Southern BBQ Pork sandwich, and Chicago-style hot dogs.

The Coliseum is open 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. Sundays through Thursdays and 11 a.m. to 2:30 a.m. Fridays and Saturdays.

Joe’s Fox Hut

Locally famous for its pizza, Joe’s Fox Hut, 41 N. Main St., has also gained reader attention for its fries, which can be ordered off the appetizer menu or served with the chicken or fish dinners.

Joe’s Fox Hut is open 3 to 9 p.m. Sundays and Mondays and 3 to 10 p.m. Wednesdays through Saturdays.

Among chain restaurants, Culver’s ranked best

Many readers turned up for their favorite local chain restaurants as well, and though it was a close race, the crinkle cut fries at Culver’s received the most votes. One reader also suggested ordering chicken tenders as the entrée, with cheese sauce to dip the fries in.

McDonald’s was second in reader enthusiasm, followed by A&W and Burger King.
