Friedmans new space on Greenwich will be an Italian concept
One of the managing owners of the Friedmans restaurants around the city — including the one in the Goldman breezeway — has taken the Caliza space on Greenwich and will convert it into its new Italian concept: Casa Louie.
Jonah Phillips and a business partner opened the first one on West 37th in February. This will be another iteration, with an expansive pizza menu along with Italian specialties and pastas, many of which can be ordered gluten free. (The recipe for the pizza crust, Jonah Phillips said, is a secret.) Friedmans is family owned, and Jonah’s sister has celiac disease; as a result they have been developing gluten free menus for years.
And like most Friedmans restaurants, the hours are also expansive: they are open 11:30a to 10p daily uptown.
W42St did a story on the origins of the restaurant when they opened: “We really wanted to create a sourdough crust that was a hybrid between the Napoletana and the New York slice,” Phillips’ partner explained. “We wanted to combine those two staple, iconic pizzas and create our own.”
The original Friedmans opened in 2009 in the Chelsea Market and even then the menu was designed to be a gluten-free safe haven. The company has developed its own flours for pancakes, waffles and fried chicken — and now pizza and pasta.
