



I thrifted this gorgeous handmade piece and some basic internet searching makes me think it's a cheese bell/some/cloche. Is it? How does one use such a thing? Does water go in the ring around the bottom for a seal, or leave it as is?
Obviously, I need to do some lead testing before using it with food. You lucked out I actually had a banana for scale.

It looks like a butter bell to me. You pack the “lid” with butter and place water in the rim like you said. That keeps it airtight and less prone to spoilage while your butter always stays nice and spreadable soft.
Edit: or as u/kdc2185 pointed out below, it may be a garlic roaster!

Looking at the dimensions, I really think this is a garlic roaster. It would explain the darkness on the lid as well.
