Malabar Style Prawn Fry Recipe | Kerala Chemmeen Coconut Fry | Prawn Stir Fry Coconut

This Malabar-style dry prawns fry is a traditional North Kerala delicacy, made with juicy prawns (chemmeen) sautéed in coconut oil along with fresh grated coconut, curry leaves, and a touch of spice. The prawns are first marinated with turmeric, chili, salt, and lemon juice, then lightly cooked. They are then tossed with grated coconut. A final touch of ¼ tsp black pepper powder and ¼ tsp garam masala powder enhances the flavor beautifully. A final drizzle of coconut oil elevates the aroma and gives it that signature Kerala finish.

Serve it hot with plain rice or as a side dish with any meal.
Tastes even better after a few hours or the next day!

Ingredients :

Marination :
250 gms Prawns (cleaned & deveined)
¼ tsp Turmeric Powder (haldi powder)
1 heaped tsp Kashmiri Red Chilli Powder
½ tsp Salt (or as per taste)
1 tsp Lemon Juice (to remove the raw smell of the prawns)

Other Ingredients :

2 to 3 tbsp Coconut Oil (use as per your diet restrictions)
½ tsp Mustard Seeds (rai)
½ tsp Fennel Seeds (saunf, perumjeerakam) – lightly crushed
2 to 3 Green Chillies (slightly slitted)
1 sprig Curry Leaves (kadhi patta)
70 gms Shallots (thinly sliced)
5 gms Ginger (finely chopped, crushed)
15 gms Garlic (finely chopped, crushed)
2 tbsp (12 to 15 gms) Grated Coconut
¼ tsp Black Pepper Powder (kali mirch powder)
¼ tsp Garam Masala Powder
1 tsp Coconut Oil
1 sprig Curry Leaves (kadhi patta)

Note : tsp is teaspoon
tbsp is tablespoon
Use Oil as per your diet restrictions
Use Chillies as per your spice preference
Always wash curry leaves & coriander leaves before use

  2. That is hands experienced in cooking _ no gloves, no jewellery, no long sleeves, and above all no fake nails. I rinse prawns with lemon juice but do not marinate it in lime or lemon as it sort of cooks the prawns like a ceviche.
