What ate my banana peppers?

I woke up this morning to find that most of my banana pepper plant was completely destroyed by something that tried to eat the peppers. Half the plant was ripped away, and I found several peppers half eaten. What kind of critters would have tried to eat the peppers? We’re on a 2nd story deck so I don’t think it could have been a deer.

I live in Maryland if that’s helpful for what kind of animal it could have been.
