These two furikake have been sitting in my pantry for about 3 weeks. In tiny print that I didn't notice until today, it says to refrigerate after opening. They look and smell fine. Is it safe to keep eating?

Nobody I know refrigerates it. It is fine.

If it’s all dried ingredients it should be ok but it may start taste stale faster.

  3. Imo its even better than refrigerating since you don’t risk droplets forming on the inside

I’ve never refrigerated mine. Haven’t had any problems.

This is the first I’m hearing that you need to refrigerate it. Just had some the other day from a jar that’s been sitting in my spice drawer for like a year. Haven’t died yet 🤷‍♂️

  6. They don’t even refrigerate it at the markets where it is sold. You’ll be OK.

  7. I’ve been eating furikake my entire life and no one in my family refrigerates it.

I sometimes refrigerate and sometimes dont. It’s only refrigerate for best quality. It has a dessicant inside in addition to the ingredients being dried, so it’s fine!

I think the longest I had mine on the countertop is something like over a year.

There is no need to refrigerate furikake because everything is dried.

Been eating it my whole life and never refrigerated it. I don’t know anyone (including restaurants I worked in) who refrigerates it either.

…I’ve never refrigerated opened furikake. No one in the family has ever gotten sick from eating it.

  12. I’ve never stored furikake in the fridge. You will be fine

The only reason I could see to refrigerate it would be to keep it from absorbing too much humidity from the air, especially in summer.

I just keep mine in the pantry, dry and dark place.

It’s safe. The refrigerator reduces humidity. Keep it from clumping.

  16. Is it dry stuff? Because that doesn’t need to be refrigerated

I went through like a dozen of those before I noticed the refrigerate text and I havent died yet….so idk. I keep it in the fridge now next to the kewpie for convenience.

Wait… We’re supposed to refrigerate that??? I’ never did and went through 3 containers 😅

I’ve never refrigerated furikake, just throw it out if it develops bad flavors, like the sesame seeds get too old. You’ll know.

I’ve never refrigerated it in my life.

Your post made my heart skip a beat until I read the comments. Phew!

My lifetime of eating months old furikake left out in a kitchen in a house without AC says no.

  23. Charm_deAnjou

Was gonna say… Shoot… I’ve never refrigerated mine.. even the ones with the bonito flakes

  24. tik-tac-taalik

I never refrigerate it and eat it way past its sell-by 🤷‍♂️

  25. BloodSpades

I’ve got 8 different flavors of this stuff, with two being my own homemade blends… NONE of has ever seen the inside of my fridge. We’re all still alive and healthy as oxen after not refrigerating ever.

  26. I’ve got some that has set in my pantry for over a year or two and it’s still good.

My husband just fed me one that was 3 years expired and never refrigerated. Nothing happened.

  28. luv2ctheworld

Uh, refrigerate that? That’s news to me.

  29. Logical_Warthog5212

I’ve never refrigerated it. I just leave them in my spice drawer.

  30. Accomplished-Ant6188

depends. It never last long enough for the sesame seed to actually go rancid ( cause it contains oil) Its gone in like 4 months most for me so I just leave outside

  31. Thank god for this thread, because I’ve never refrigerated furikake in my entire life and was wondering if it was something everyone else knew this whole time. Lmao.

  32. Kitchen-Document4917

It would probably go bad faster if you refrigerated it

  33. Ok_Hat_3414

Thanks everyone. I had some and didn’t die, so I guess it doesn’t really need to be refrigerated.

  34. CodyKyle

It definitely smells rancid when it goes bad so that’s when I toss them

  35. Professional_Low1966

I have never refrigerated it. But maybe I will? Idk?

I’ve always had it sitting out on my spice rack.
