Our tomatoes got completely and utterly out of hand while we were on vacation — over 6 feet tall and taking over the entire raised bed. We have a ton of green tomatoes but none of them have been turning red. Is there anything I can do at this point, or next year should I just stay on top of it and prune early? Only my second year with a garden, so very new to it and appreciate all the insight!

Probably look up some videos about trimming tomatoes, once they’re not sending energy to more and more new growth they’ll be able to put more energy into the tomatoes

Start at the top and prune all the growing tips. Then start thinning and removing suckers. If you have suckers that have a significant amount of fruit on them then you can decide to keep those if you want. At this point in the year I usually don’t allow mine to get much taller and try to get them to focus their energy on growing and ripening existing fruits.

Next year try to thin and prune at least once a week after they really get growing.

i’m sorry, but this is just hilarious to me!

NOT because i don’t understand what you’re going though, but because i DO

take the advice above, and enjoy tomatoes into 1.10.2026

This happened to me this year (first time gardener) and I just spent the last two days pruning and staking. If you have some time and patience it will be worth it, they look so much better now. Lesson learned not to let them go so crazy next year!
