Hermann, Mo. (Amazing America) — If a European vacation simply isn’t in the budget this summer, don’t fret: There are many cities right here in the U.S. with international flair to spare and, even better, they don’t break the bank. One standout is Hermann, Missouri, a scenic town nestled along the Missouri River in the heart of the state’s wine country.
With its cobblestone streets, timber-framed buildings and deep German roots, Hermann emits a distinctive Old World ambience reminiscent of 19th-century Europe. Founded by German immigrants in the 1830s, the town is proud of its heritage and represents it well — from authentic bratwurst and biergartens to annual festivals like Maifest and Oktoberfest.
Whether you’re sipping local wines at one of the many acclaimed vineyards or strolling through charming shops filled with German imports, Hermann is an immersive cultural destination that feels worlds away — without ever leaving the Midwest.
Here’s how we’d spend a day there!
To start your day in Hermann, grab a coffee and a bite to eat at Espresso Laine.
Definitely make a trip to Hermann Farm, being sure to tour the historic Greek Revival-style Teubner-Husmann home. After that, head to the nearby Historic Hermann Museum, located in the 1871 German School Building, which is a historical treasure trove in its own right.
Hermann is home to many amazing wineries, but if we had to choose one, we’d go to Stone Hill Winery, Missouri’s oldest and most awarded winery. They offer wine tasting and tours. Tours are free but on a first come, first served basis, and wine tasting is $15 per person and includes six samples & a souvenir wine glass. Fun fact: They have the largest network of underground cellars in North America!
After working up a sweat with a hike on the Missouri River-adjacent Katy Trail, enjoy an authentically crafted German beer and a bratwurst or pretzel at Tin Mill Brewing Company in downtown Hermann. Bonus: It’s located in a 100-year-old grain bin. Prost!
