Picos Restaurant, a Houston institution known for its margaritas and Mexican cuisine, will close after 44 years, with farewell events planned.
HOUSTON — A Houston culinary landmark is preparing to close its doors after more than four decades of serving authentic regional Mexican cuisine.
Arnaldo Richards’ Picos Restaurant, located at 3601 Kirby Drive in the Upper Kirby neighborhood, announced its upcoming closure in a heartfelt Facebook post from the Richards family.
“After 44 wonderful years of serving this community, we have made the difficult decision to close our restaurant,” the post read. “We are incredibly grateful for the privilege and opportunity to have shared our passion for food and hospitality with you.”
According to the restaurant’s website, Picos, founded by Monterrey-born chef Arnaldo Richards, has long been celebrated for its dedication to traditional Mexican gastronomy. The restaurant earned national recognition for its extensive tequila program, once named one of the 15 Best Places to Drink Tequila Around the U.S. by Food & Wine, and is widely credited as the birthplace of the shaker margarita.
Chef Richards, who began cooking professionally by age 14, turned his passion into a family-run Houston institution. Over the years, Picos became known not only for its elevated cuisine but also for its innovative bar program and strong relationships with agave distillers.
“Thank you again for being a part of our journey,” the family wrote. “We will always treasure the memories we’ve made together and will miss you dearly.”
The restaurant’s legacy is deeply tied to Houston’s culinary identity, leaving behind a lasting impact on both locals and visitors alike.
