I’m looking to pick up my first pellet grill and I am browsing Facebook marketplace and Lowe’s. On market place I see a Pit Boss 1150 Pro Series 2 purchased 2 years ago for 400 dollars. It’s got a grill kit with a temp probe, 72 grease buckets, and a grill cover.
There is a bit of rust that is behind the front table. This seems like an okay deal, but I wanted to check before I pulled the trigger or went to Lowe’s and bought a new one.

I would offer 3 I paid 200 for a used 1000 in about the same condition.
i’ve owned 3 pit boss pellet grills… have never been able to get anything fixed via their “warranty”.
will never waste money on them again.
I’d pay no more than $100 for that 2nd hand. The kit is a bunch of BS temu junk.
I’m not buying someone else’s potential problem for $400. You can get a working brand new pit poss for less than that depending what size and features you need.
Seems kinda high. I paid 500 for my pb1000 at tractor supply new. Maybe priced high so you can negotiate price.
I saw the shadow of the handle and thought it was a coral snake.
I have the 850 version of that. I don’t think $400 is unfair if they agree to do a test run to confirm good operation.
That being said My friend has the 1150. They are good units, but having owned a Recteq before this, I would save that $400 to go towards a recteq. Even heat distribution and good smoke production are weak spots for these pit bosses. Any low and slow cooking has to fit on the upper rack, as the lower grate has a nasty hot spot center-right, gotta get the meat up off the lower rack.
The main reason I bought mine was the ability to get direct flame to things on the lower rack, which is does better than the recteq though they have versions that do this too. The pit boss pro series 2 is a good step up from a lesser unit, and a good experience for you to figure out what you do and don’t like, so the next purchase is more informed.
I bought my PB 1000 for 175 new on close out from Walmart 3 years ago. Really happy with it.
I love mine.
I paid $379 Canadian at Lowe’s on clearance.
I love mine but the placement of the fire chamber makes it hard to get a perfect brisket. Any replacement parts were sent to me free of charge expedited they even upgraded my board to the Bluetooth one, so their customer service is pretty good in my experience. As long as you vacuum the ashes from the fire chamber every couple cooks it works great.
The grilling tools are worth about $15 on Amazon. I wouldn’t factor that in too much. They’re cheap-o Chinese junk.
As I’ve seen I would offer $300. Slap some high temp black paint after cleaning up the rust and you will be good for awhile. Personally I think pit boss is a good grill. I own 2 and am about to buy my 3rd. When they break they are frustrating but what isnt. so..
I wouldn’t. Maybe $100.
Are you in the St. Louis area I swear this same grill is on mine?
IDK – I had poor luck with a Pit Boss pellet stove. I had good luck with a Traeger and a Green Mountain.
I have a pit boss 850, and it is complete garbage. The controller has never worked. I get huge temps swings (over 100F). Their support team won’t help. It’s literally unusable. Never again.
I’ve got a Pit boss and love it but I would never lay $400 for that. Maybe $200 but you can get a brand new Austin xl 1000 for $500 at Walmart. They go on sale all the time
Fuck pit boss
