It's been a ridiculous summer to grow tomatoes, simply not enough heat for them. There's so much anthocyanin in the leaves they sometimes look almost violet and other signs of cold weather stress like sturdy low growth, stems twice ss thick as usual and double, triple, even quadruple trusses. I ended up topping off super early and also a while ago pinched off every flower that looked like it won't open within a couple of days. Now there has been ripe ones here and there for a week, and soon, soon they will start coming!!

The variety is Trixi. They are super tasty and disease resistant, but don't ripen well indoors and not much shelf life.

Except not completely Trixi, I've been sloppy with seed saving because before my community garden neighbours didn't often have guts to try grow tomatoes, and last summer there was some obvious cross pollination. Second to last is this heavy producer, a bit bigger fruit than the 20g Trixi, most vigorous plant of them all, and trying to flowe so aggressively I had to prune back the trusses. Only slightly slower to ripen than smaller Trixi. And then in last picture another weirdo, incredibly robust plant, slow to ripen, but getting there even on summer like this. Can't wait to try how these taste!

And yeah I mulched with straw, there was seeds, now I have oats, I don’t give af lol!

(they’re easy to pull if needed, but I like to just cut them at most on the edges of the beds as the roots are good at keeping those edges from crumbling when it’s dry)

They look fantastic! Great job! My question is, how do you get the critters away from the tomatoes? They are eating all of mine no matter what I have done! Also, where do you live that it’s not that hot? We’re in the north east and it’s been blazing🔥🔥🔥

My favorite thing about Tomato Reddit is seeing the thriving gardens of people all over the world. The third picture belongs in a magazine! 😍 Congrats to you. Yay Finland! 🫶🏻
