I smoked a tri-tip and wanted to grill the outside to give it some quality crusty flavor. Reading some online recipes they suggested “crank the grill up and get it as hot as you can. Well, it got hot!
Guess the “clean the drip tray” instructions were really important and I skipped them … for a looooong time.
Yes, the grill is next to the house, yes I am incredibly thankful I didn’t burn down my house. Yes, I did take a picture instead of putting out the fire immediately.

Ok so what’s the tip on cleaning the grill so this doesn’t happen? New to grilling here and I clean the grates and check the drop pan but is there something else?

A dumbass neighbor of mine was all proud of his brand spankin new vinyl siding he just installed and did this with his grill, shoved up against the side of his house and under the eaves, so the heat was trapped in. Melted a huge patch of the siding and damn near lit his roof on fire. His deck was only horribly scorched, but only because his wife happened to be paying attention through the kitchen window and saw all the smoke. She ran out and put everything out with a fire extinguisher. He was the kind of kid that lights fireworks in their hand.
