Last night I had the rare pleasure of enjoying a vertical tasting of Château Mouton Rothschild 1990, 1995, and 1997 during a wine-pairing dinner. For me hands down the 1990 stole the show. Was by far my favorite of the three.
1990 Mouton Rothschild:
This was the star of the night, hands down.it had notes of dried blackberries, cedar, cigar box, and a hint of leather. On the palate, it was silky and layered, with notes of cassis, graphite, and earthy mushroom.
1995 Mouton Rothschild:
More structure and slightly more restrained, this was number two bottle. The palate leaned more toward black cherry, tobacco, and hints of spice. Tannins were still present but softened enough to enjoy now.
1997 Mouton Rothschild:
Clearly the lightest of the three. The fruit was fading a bit red currant, dried plum.
I’ve done quite a few of these vertical Bordeaux tasting so far. This might sound crazy but this was more enjoyable than the Lafite and then Haut-Brion. Up next a 4 bottle (1986,1990,1994,2000) vertical of Latour

That’s a top tier vertical!
1990 Mouton is favorite vintages from them. Such a killer wine.
I’m interested to hear your opinions on the vertical of Latour. Please report back
For me, Latour is my least favorite of the first growths. It shines best in off vintages.
Have you done a vertical of Margaux? 2005 Margaux is still one of the best wines I’ve ever had. It’s a pleasure drinking their wine. They’re my favorite, along with Haut Brion. Cheers!
1997 was a bad year for Bordeaux, but I’m jealous. Of the big 5 I’ve only had a 1996 Lafite Rothschild about two years ago and wished I had bought more in 1999.
Looks like you went to House of Prime Rib
