So I made a loaf of bread and I cut it straight (ish) down the middle. My family said it’s odd that I cut it like that. My reason for cutting it down the middle is because this way it makes it easier to make sandwiches that are at even lengths. If you go from left to right when slicing bread one piece will be a little smaller in the beginning and end of the loaf. The only reason I could think that cutting it down the middle is bad is that more air is exposed to your loaf.

So I figured I’d get the experts of bread to weigh in on this. Which way seems more right? Down the middle or left to right?

I’ve been doing that almost since I began baking bread; it helps keep the bread from going stale by keeping the cut ends covered. Leaving one of the butt ends will result in uneven coverage after a couple of slices, but if you cut from the middle the cut ends will stay roughly the same size as you cut and help protect the exposed crumb.

  2. That’s how I always do it with batards and boules, that way I got the same size slices for sandwiches.

Cut it horizontally the long way (parallel to the cutting board)

Straight ish? Come on now. Alan Carr is straighter than that.

I do it this way and push the sides together to keep the bread from going stale. I wouldn’t want to just leave one end open. Honestly thought everyone did it this way

I mean, if you are using the full loaf to make a single sandwich…. Then sure.

Really though, I feel like I am missing something pretty fundamental here. Are you just going to cut this into like 6 long slices instead of a dozen regular? Don’t you have the same problem with the pieces cut from the center being taller than the ones closer to the edge?

Yes its weird. Loaves are not uniform unless you make them so via the lidded box forms (think japanese milk bread). So even if you cut from the middle out, you’re still going to get the “issue” that one piece is going to be slightly smaller than the next one.

However cutting it normally allows for those off sized pieces to form together into a normal connecting piece. So there isn’t weird overhangs as even if one piece has more bread than the other the edges line up anyways. So what does it matter? Sandwich fixings always creep out one side anyways because of the physical pressure from biting, so who cares if the bread isn’t perfectly uniform?

If it is REALLY OCD bothersome, then just cut the sandwich square after making it and snack on the extras before the sandwich.

Doing it from the center just makes the bread get stale that much faster because you’re exposing both ends to air. All for practically zero gain.

If a loaf comes out really uneven from end to 1/4 through, like in the picture, then cut the really really low end of the bread off and eat it as buttered toast as a snack or with dinner that day, then the rest of the sandwich loaf is fine. Cutting from the center will eventually yield two smaller than sandwich size ends that are also BOTH more stale than you’d want by the time you get to them so you’re more likely to toss/breadcrumb them.

My husband does this with my precious loaves and it drives me crazy 😂😂

I thought I’d seen some sick shit in my life but this takes the cake

Do we really need sandwiches to be perfectly symmetrical? (Other than for a culinary competition or something of the like).

Sure it’s a different size, but how much of a difference really?. Besides, It’s going down your gullet in minutes, soon to be brown mush in a few hours. If you’re concerned about the filling falling out, then… skill issue I guess, fill your sandwich better, less on the edges.

I also struggle with cutting straight lines unless I really pay attention😂 Is it a bit different that you cut it this way, yes but that’s not a bad thing

Not weird at all. Cut it however you want. Every single crumb shot posted on here starts this way.

I do this, especially with round loaves. It’s not necessary with all sandwiches but it’s perfect with grilled cheese.

I do this. Except I get my loafs cut at the store. But I take even slices from each side to make sure my sandwich breads are even. Maybe it’s my OCD 🤷‍♂️

  15. I never thought about doing it but now I might because that’s actually kind of brilliant.

    I understand you ❤️

I do this cause even slices and then the loaf halves create a better seal against air, in my mind at least ✨️

I also cut my prime rib this way. Why cut the end piece off if no one wants it? I leave it and the bread heel attached until someone asks for it.

Just eat one large sandwich. Much more efficient than a lot of smaller ones.

(Damn this is the most comments I’ve gotten on a post so I’m a little shocked, also not sure how to edit the post but I figured a reply is needed)
It’s not that I have an issue with un even bread it’s just an idea I thought of to make sandwiches a bit more symmetrical. Also sorry to anyone who thinks I deserve jail time for this 😭🙏 And I know I can’t cut straight for the life of me…
I might continue to cut bread like this just to peeve people, it’s unique and I enjoy it. Have a good day ❤️

There’s a lotta deli sandwiches with longer bread, so nothing wrong with it
