Okay so the Fishwife Rainbow Trout is delicious. But I’ve heard others say you can get similar (or better) quality for cheaper. Please recommend me some brands!

Eager to see the responses. This actually perked hubby’s interest.

I do also like the Cole’s trout—had it at breakfast today—but it’s not an apples-to-apples comparison. The Fishwife is distinctively good.

Cole’s is phenomenal. As is Fangst, but that’s starting to get pricey again.

Trader Joe’s has smoked trout for 4.49. It’s reliably delicious. (:

Well I guess the first thought is that Fishwife prices are all over the map depending on where you buy it. Go to some fancy store they act like it’s in a gold tin. If your local Target carries it, it’s not so bad especially on sale. So I’m not really sure what your benchmark is for cheaper so I’ll just check my notes for trout in general.
The next thought is that there’s nothing special about the fishwife trout. It’s good but that says more about trout than fishwife.
Anyway Cole’s smoked trout is totally decent and should be cheaper. Fangst Danish Freshwater Trout is my favorite and it’s not that expensive if you’re willing to commit to a bulk pack on Amazon. Jost Gourmet has a really nice smoked trout in olive oil, but they and their sister company ABC also have a trout in curry that’s really nice but $$$.
I’ll also point out if you like trout you probably also like salmon and if you like heavily smoked you should try Wildfish. Jose Gourmet Smoked in EVOO is great. The Fangst salmons didn’t impress me.
So anyway that’s some stuff to try. See what you think.

Yall are not gonna like this, but I had this back to back with the Senor Trader Jose one, and Senor Jose won.

Trader Joe’s is similar and less expensive. Not quite as reliably tender as Fishwife but pretty close. I have been seeing higher prices lately but still much less than Fishwife.
Cole’s is milder and less smoky but very very good and less expensive.
Fangst is a similar price point but better than Fishwife.
I think Fishwife is still a solid option though. I think the “Fishwife is overpriced” thing is less true for the trout compared to other varieties. There just aren’t that many options that are easily accessible.

I’m a Cole’s fan. It has an extremely delicate texture that makes it different from any other canned fish I’ve tried (though I admit I haven’t tried the Fishwife trout).

The only one I’ve had is Coles and I was very impressed

The current version tastes just like trader joe’s. Now the old fishwife smoked trout in the circle tins was unique and Ive never seen a substitute for it. It was smoked longer or something. Very rich smoky flavor but still tender. They changed to this about a year ago and now I don’t really have a reason to order anything from them

In my opinion, Fangst and Jose Gourmet are higher quality and have a similar price. Trader Joe’s is delicious and cheaper, but Fishwife is a little better. Surprisingly, Bumble Bee makes a decent and cheap one that is a solid daily driver.

Is it $11/tim because of the tariffs or has it always been that expensive?

it’s not canned, but Echo Falls smoked trout is delicious
