Is homemade pesto even worth making? Or should we just buy it from the store and save some time? I’m going to find out through a blind taste test. But first, what is even the difference? Well, not only do you gain control over the ingredients, the way these ingredients are processed at home is very different than in an industrial setting. Everything gets freshly crushed and releases oils and aromomas that are essential to a gestto. to make it cheaper and more shelf stable. Often times, the store-bought ones may alter ingredients and add all sorts of stabilizers and stuff that are going to mess with the flavor and the texture. But let’s see if I can actually taste the difference. And to make it a bit harder, I use both in aki dish. We’re going to start over here. It just has this kind of like chemical vibe to it. I’m I’m fine with it. I’m I’m just not the biggest fan. No, that’s what I’m talking about. So much more flavor, so much more aromatic. This one is just like flat. This one is a is a journey.

  1. Tried it with a mortar and pestle ones, now I have a 400+ euro genuine Italian marble mortar 😂

  2. Literally anything homemade is 10 thousand times better, because of its freshness.
Even so simple sauces as mayonnaise.

  3. "chemical vibe" is so silly. It sounds like you don't know how to describe the difference so you just describe a vague preconceived notion in your head.

  4. For a few weeks a year we get wild garlic so I go out foraging and I make my own pesto. Unfortunately It's not here long enough so I can't get sick of it.

  5. I fucking hate packaged pesto, its to acid.I have been abstaining for almost a year without eating it because I couldn't find all the ingredients to make it like spinach. But when my mom came to where I lived, we bought together and made it and was fucking delicious. Like the nostalgia from not eating it for a long time and it was cooked by my mom, that's why it was so good too .

  6. I only like homemade pesto. I love you can change the ingredients too. I like using parsley and walnuts or making a broccoli pesto with lemon.

  7. It's worth noting that you can buy 'fresh' pesto at a lot of stores, which has a recipe closer to the homemade stuff and is stored in the fridge rather than the jarred sauces section. It's more expensive than the jarred stuff but you do taste the difference.

  8. I’ve done both. Homemade is a little nicer but store bought pesto is just so convenient for an easy and quick meal.

  9. it's like jarlic, i work in a restaurant so i'm blessed with free, sad basil once a week at the moment, i just make tons of pesto, i usually use pecans or cashews for the nut, and then i freeze it and give it to everyone, the worst homemade pesto is better than the best store bought, i remember blitzing the storebought with some fresh garlic and herbs if i had em on occasion tho, i remember liking the one from aldi's the best for store brand

  10. I’m allergic to pine nuts, is there anything I could use as a substitute? (That goes for all tree nuts)

  11. You need several free hours and much more money than store bought, to buy all ingredients, and to clean up afterwards. And store bought could live in your fridge for ages. So yeah, it definitely has it place.

In my country and city, cost of the pine nuts and fresh basil alone make home pesto a luxury meal.

  12. Homemade pesto is not even comparable to the storebought kind. They're like a completely different product. They should be used for different things.

  13. I tried making pesto once but not only was it way more expensive, I didn't like it as much (I think I got the amounts wrong?) and I wasn't able to make it keep well in the fridge, so if I wanted it on a semi regular basis, I'd have to make it each time.

  14. Use salt to rub the garlic into a paste first and the add the rest of the ingredients. The salt works like an abrasive and makes your pesto extra smooth

  15. The only thing holding me back is the price of pine nuts. They cost as much as a jar or store bought pesto on its own

  16. If you guys are gonna try it Please please please try it with anchovies! My dad made it like this and its a gamechanger

  17. You should get someone else to try ittt where they don’t know what they are comparing. They just have to pick what “better”.

  18. And what about the price of pine nuts?? That changes my opinion on whether to make homemade pesto or not 😂
