I want to start a side business making gender reveal cakes for women in my community. I'd probably ~ charge around $20 each?? I was working with very few tools- mainly just a little icing knife. Is this a good first attempt at making a cake? Please be brutally honest. I’d like to know before I invest in some better tools. It was a chocolate cake with a whipped raspberry filling.

You know it is.
As someone who struggles with the same issue I think you should work on getting the icing smoother. Also, your buttercream looks like it could be stiffened up, it looks a little soft to me.
Good first attempt? Yes.
Good enough to be considering a side business? You’ve got room to grow for sure, but this is a promising start.
I would hesitate to consider taking commissions/making sales before you’ve had plenty of time to practice and work out the kinks. Especially pricing… if you actually spend the time to improve your decorating and reach a more “polished” skillset, $20 for a what looks to be 6 in cake with at least 3 layers, premium flavors/filling, and hand piping, is NOT gonna be earning you much $$$ as a side hustle. Considering ingredients, time, cost of equipment/cake boards/boxes… you’d be doing charity to sell at that price.
